Collector Limpets Expiring

The wiki is wrong, then. Or at least, it's taking the lifetime of the longest limpet available (prospectors can last indefinitely) rather than giving the actual lifetime for each type.

So the Prospectors are infinite, but collectors are not?
Sounds like I'm looking at the wrong source... Is there a right source?

What is the expected life time of Collector limpets when using the Class 7 Universal Multi Limpet Controller?
From what I can find, Wiki fandom (https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Universal_Multi_Limpet_Controller) the Limpets should be infinite life span. But they only last about 6 minutes.

Why does this occur?

All MLC/ULC seem to feature the same rate, but one size lower type of limpet

So 7A ULC will feature 5A limpets (if they actually do exist, else the nearest available)
In your question, 5A collectors featured by the 7A ULC will last 12 minutes, while the 7C ULC collectors, being actually 5C collectors, will last around 8 minutes

Unfortunately, the description for ULC/MLC will list the best feature from each type of limpet featured:
  • prospectors have infinite time - they dont actually have an expiration time, but only range and a limited number of prospectors active at any given time - so you will get unlimited in description
  • collectors will feature slowest speed while in non-targeted mode - so you will get 60m/s in the description
  • hatch breakers will provide the highest speed (500m/s) in the description, if they are featured

So the Prospectors are infinite, but collectors are not?

Not exactly
You do need to know what type of limpets are featured by the MLC/ULC and check the individual Limpet Controllers of the same rate but one size lower.

IIRC the only exception would be the Decon limpets - IIRC the 3B and 3C xeno MLC is featuring the size 1 repair limpet but the size 3 decon limpet - which makes the decon limpet repairing a bit more than the actual repair limpet - no idea if this is a feature or a bug...

Edit: i wouln't say the wiki is wrong since it reflects what we're being shown in game. FDev probably had to chose what type of info is featured in the MLC/ULC description since they could not cram everything in it - which lead to this unfortunate "best parameter" being shown...

Note that @Ian Doncaster said prospector limpets can last indefinitely. You can only have as many active prospector limpets as the controller allows. As soon as you fire additional prospector limpets the old ones expire. And I believe there is a range limitation when your ship travels too far away from it too.

Between 1 and 11.8 kilometres depending on the controller fitted for normal controllers, I have no clue about the multi controllers but suspect similar ranges there.

think the biggest range i've seen would be for 7A ULC -- 9.1km (which is matching the 5A prospector range)

Edit: yeap, from EDSY

Max range > from 5A Prospector
Hacking time > from 5A hatch breaker
maximum speed > same as above
multi-target speed > from targeted collectors
repair > from 5A repair limpet
min-max cargo > from 5A hatch breaker limpet
