Newcomer / Intro Collector limpets not collecting!

Hey Commanders,
Here's a new one (for me, anyway).
I'm mining Void Opals.
I found a good asteroid, popped it open, opened my cargo scoop, deployed a collector limpet and collected/refined 17 tons of opals. All good.
About 20 minutes later I found a second good asteroid, popped it open, opened my cargo scoop, deployed a collector limpet, and it's just sitting there.
So i deployed a second one, and it just sat there too.
'Contacts' shows about 20 void opals, and they are not on my 'ignore' list...
Why would these collectors NOT collect?

(and, while I'm asking) how do i keep the ship warm when the cargo scoop is open during collection? My temp is 1% and the windscreen is completely iced over!

Cold, and mystified.

Maybe you just need to get closer to the fragments? There's a maximum range for the limpets to spring in to life.

Not sure how you could heat your ship up, but you may be pleased to know that at 1% heat NPCs cannot lock you. You're cloaked essentially. So it's cold. But safe :)

At that sort of temperature I would expect that you were in the ice cloud produced by a core explosion if so moving further away will let you become more easily targeted by bad guys.

While we're on this subject, you might be interested to note that collector limpets have various ranges depending on which controller you have installed.

For example, a 3A collector limpet controller has a 1.32km range, whereas a 3E has only .88km range.

Keep that in mind when choosing controllers, as part of your decision making process.

If you really don't like to get cold you can turn the heat up by going into silent running ... There are no real down-sides to running cold though, apart from the icy windscreen.

That and active time. B-rated collector controllers actually have a longer range than A-rated ones, but lower limpet life-time. For deep core mining when you may be running fewer limpets but anyway might lose limpets between asteroids, B-rating the controller for larger range may be viable. For laser mining, I always A-rate the collectors for maximum life-time.
