Collector Limpets run into planet

So I recently started playing a few weeks ago and I am seeing some mixed things out there on Collector limpets behavior being a point of contention... I am trying to use them to collect drops from planet surfaces and they just run into the ground and die aside from the odd lucky one. I have seen people say it was changed a few months ago. It's a "COLLECTOR" limpet so kind of defeats the point if they don't actually collector things... My logic tells me if it has always functioned both in space and on surface and if it was an issue where they shouldn't have been usable on the planet surface, then it would/should have been noted as only operational in the absence of gravity or something so its current behavior must be a bug. If this was done as an oops we didn't realize the equipment designed for picking up cargo does it job too well, then balance it another way like make the flak cannon inoperable in atmosphere or something dumb like that. At least then you wont waste ammo when there isn't anything to tell you this isn't going to work the way it obviously should.... Anyone hear of a fix/work around or if this was officially swatted to slow player resource farming in a game that's 11 years old or are they aware and maybe eventually going to get around to fixing it?

There was a period where collector limpets did work on planet surfaces and it was possible to use dumb fire missiles to liberate surface resources and then hoover them up with the collectors.
I believe this erroneous operation has since been 'fixed' so that collector limpets now crash pointlessly into the surface.

I know, I know.
You can't write this stuff, but it is true to the best of my knowledge.

The fix is to land your ship, deploy an SRV, then use its scoop it to collect the items.

I have seen it said that this exploit can still be used if you do specific things to your graphics settings and fire the limpets off at a specific point and direction.
My take on that is if you are resorting to such arcane tricks then it has gone beyond being an exploit.

I think the trick worked "by accident", and then my best guess is that when FD broke the trick it was also "by accident" (let's be real - they almost never fix long-standing bugs/exploits intentionally) so all in all there's kinda nothing to fix, really.
(But like @aRJay I've also seen a claim that the trick can still be made to work somehow.)

LOL, yeah that's a fun bug - don't make the mistake of driving over any mats :)
So I was literally just about the post this very same thing. The change in Limpet Behavior wouldn't be as bad if I didn't have to try and drive over the same thing three times to pick it up or if touching it with my wheel didn't send it shooting out into atmosphere if you're lucky or your vehicle going into orbit if you're not.

I should also mention how aggravating it is trying to shoot materials off of trees only for them to get stuck in the branches instead of fall to the ground where I can actually pick the stupid thing up. I mean in my opinion if the game can't handle those physics then just make it auto collect when you shoot it off the tree. Make it only harvestable by a srv-based mining laser problem solved

Yeah it doesn't work anymore. Pity cause it was fun gameplay, bombard the crystal forests from up high, search for them on empty planets far away, i found it very atmospheric. Now it's same old same old nausea driving SRV.

Use collector limpets to acquire cargo units in space.

Wouldn't it be amazing if you could get out on foot, blast them off with a shotgun then pick them up by hand? Instead of doing the equivalent trying to pick a lock with wet blotting paper.

I frequently get out and shoot them off with plasma pistol because it's easier and then wonder why I can't just pick them up. Fdev give is a suit modification that mounts a bucket to the belt and let us pick them up manually please? I would much rather roleplay as a brain tree farmer than try to get the srv out of another tree.

I dunno, they fixed that issues when people were hacking to undermine Sol and others, with promises to fix everything but then forgot to fix anyone other than Sol. (New Conspiracy Unlocked: unfair hacks were totally find when Archer used them on Sol post Cocijo, when Aisling was about to claim it.)

Go up to about 900 metres, and level out to 0 degrees attitude. As long as you're nose level and far enough away, the limpets will work. Don't be pointing down at the ground. That's what confuses them.
