These really need to be totally revamped, but for now it would be nice to have a way to prevent them suiciding into asteroids. With surface and core fragments sometimes staying on the surface of the asteroid, or even floating inside of it, the collector limpets don't have a chance. So either fix it so that the fragments always propelled away from the asteroid (I've tried shooting at different angles w/o success), or change the collector behavior.
Suggestion: after being fired, collector limpets should ignore a newly targeted fragment. This will give the commander an opportunity to target a problematic fragment and scoop it, and the collectors will ignore it instead of fighting to get it first and crashing and dying. This will improve game play and reduce frustration.
In reality though, collectors should be valuable pieces of equipment, like an SRV, and that can be given commands, monitored for damage, called back for repair and refuelling, and etc. Let them bump into things, but only get some hull damage that can accumulate - If you ignore it they can be destroyed, but usually they will just be repaired when they are recalled. And if they run out of fuel, you can scoop them. And forget the whole destroy yourself after collecting a targeted object - how is that even a thing? Only if there is no cargo space should they be sacrificed, but it would be better if they were part of the limpet controller mass. But enough of that...
