Collision damage does not count toward kill/bounty - bug or design?

Found a clipper in my eagle. Stpd high bounty. FSDI>success. Only myself and NPC in the instance - no fuzz.
Fresh ammo cans, dumped on him - disabled drives before he could book it, but ran out of ammo to finish the deed.
_
Not satisfied, I continued to juggle his dead forward momentum with my shields and repeated slams to his hull under boost to drop him down the last 15% w/o pushing him past my max velocity. 35 minute battle, down to the last bit of 'umph' > kaboom, but no blue satisfaction - no bounty collected. Satisfying as that kill was, frustration ensues...
_
Guessing based on the above I could apply this tactic to a noob and kill w/o catching bounty (wouldn't really be fun for me, just exploring the impact of this mechanic)?
_
Bug or by design?
Shouldn't collision damage count for the kill and hence the bounty?

Seems collision damage doesn't count, when gathering bounties, only weapon damage does - but if you bump a cop, yep, you get a bounty on your own head.

If your target dies to collision, you don't get their bounty.

What do you not understand? I interdicted an NPC with a high bounty, I gunned him down to 15% hull, and I finished the job by slamming into him but caught no reward.
Happy to explain, but your reply is found wanting.

Collision damage does count if it's within a few seconds of your last shot. I collect bounties like this all the time, even when I accidentally suicide against the target. The server registers both deaths at the same time and the bounty can still be collected on when I respawn.

Now, if you can collect a bounty after dying, that's a bug.

Makes a bit more sense, the last bit of bumping took almost 20 minutes as could only catch up with him via boost.
Still think I should of got that bounty - never worked harder for it... :)

Chicken and egg. Who died first? Server doesn't know, and it's something that's a difficult fix with pretty much no impact on gameplay. You're lucky if you get half of what your ship insurance costs out of the deal. I see no reason to label it "bug" and waste dev time when there are plenty of legitimate problems to be fixed.

Doesn't matter who dies first - dead's dead - dead don't collect bounties.

If collision damage flagged hostility and applied bounty, every slot in every station would be a warzone where npcs (and players) constantly die and the entrance would be full of wreckage and cargo.

Well I did not die - and fulfilled the kill order in the form of the bounty on his head. Dun much care if I shot him or gave him space ebola, he's dead and I did it.
show me the money!

Only for death, but that's balanced by (or should be?) catching a bounty for killing a clean pilot via collision - same as if you killed him with lead or light.

Perhaps he was a Green Target and you lost all rep in killing him so no bounty if same Faction after lots of lost rep with them?

This would suck - I have not been paying attention to rep as much (thought it was broken last check).
Do not believe I am green to anything in this system though as just arrived.
