Colonia Local Region Survey - Name Your Discoveries

1B2oWRU.png

Greetings, Cmdrs.

As I am working on the revamped Local Region Survey for the soon-to-come CCN website, I invite all people who discovered systems, stars, planets and moons, and POIs around the Colonia system to name them. This will help us feel at home, as well as (who knows?) lay the ground for long-lasting designations for this young colony.

  • The LRS reserves the right not to accept a name if said name is frivolous, offensive, etc.
  • Submissions cannot request to bear the name of the discoverer/submitter.
  • Names must have a meaning and/or a background.
  • The LRS will not be chasing you for a mistake or second thoughts and will, if possible, process the submission on its own; so submit wisely. Thank you!
  • Disclaimer: this project has nothing to do with the Galactic Mapping Project and is not affiliated to Frontier Developments in any way. This is purely for role-play and convenience among members of the CCN and Colonia residents.

If by the time the website is online (in about two weeks), I lack some names, I will attribute them. If and when the discoverer steps forward and gives a new name, if said name is within the rules I will use it over the previous one.

NAME SUBMISSIONS FOR KNOWN SYSTEMS/BODIES/POIs

Bodies orbited by stations/outposts in the first Colonia inhabited systems > Poll

Planets orbited by stations at the time of writing will be named by a poll first shared on the Colonia Gazette a few weeks back; anyone can submit names for those by filling this form, and I'll pick the ones I find most appropriate by the time the website goes live.

Earth-Like Worlds > Discoverer's Form > Public Form

If you are the discoverer of one of the ELWs below, your submission takes precedence (if you come forward). In the meantime, anyone can submit a name. To do so, use this form. List of known ELWs within 100ly of Colonia and their discoverer below (from the List Of Eart-Like Worlds, v2 database).

Full Systems > Discoverer's Form > Public Form

If you are the discoverer of a system that has been colonized or is planned to be (cf. CEI), you can either name it, name it and a part of it or name it and all its bodies inside (minus the orbited body, as said above). To do so, either use this form (for a few names); or post in this thread the full list of bodies+system name if you want to name all. HOWEVER, in the case of someone having tagged the planets while you only had tagged the star, the planet discoverer will have precedence over you for the planets' names. NB: The name of the system is the name of the primary star. List of inhabited and soon-to-be inhabited systems and their discoverer below.

>> For all the above, a little background/explanation is always welcome. If you submit a name and it's not use for its intended purpose, it might be used on another body/POI. There are dozens of names to give out there :)

NEW SUBMISSIONS

  • The Local Region Survey only accepts inhabited systems, exceptional and/or inhabited planets, landmarks, unusual or remarkable geological features and historical or event locations (racetracks, etc.) Its reach only spans about 25 ly beyond inhabited systems. If your POI or naming candidate is situated farther than this, consider submitting it for the General Colonia Catalog or the Galactic Mapping Project. The only exception to the distance rule is for Earth-Like Worlds. You can submit an ELW up to a 100ly around Colonia.
  • The LRS will not be transferring inadequate submissions to the CMP, the GCC or any other project. To submit an entry, please select the appropriate form and fill it accurately and seriously.
  • Water = Geysers; Lava = Fumeroles.

To each LRS entry, I add two pictures: one location map of the planetary location OR a picture of the system/planet, AND the full system map (see examples below; size is 100%). If one can submit those when they submit their discovery, it would be a great help. When submitting, I recommend using Imgur to store your photos online (their links are short, it's handy). Please use .jpg compression and do not link pics larger than 1920x1080. If you have Photoshop or GIMP and are willing to give it a few minutes, for the system map use this Ps template or that GIMP template; for the photo card use this Ps template or that GIMP template. If you can't use those, add all the photo links to your submission or a link to a .rar archive, a DropBox, etc.

Last but not least, if you want to give a hand with registering new locations etc. once the website is live, gimme a shout on the CCN Discord. Job includes reviewing submissions, flying to the location, have a look, take pics if needed, etc., all within a small sphere around Colonia ;)

This is a great idea. I look forward to seeing what names people come up with.
I tried to Rep you, but it won't allow me another one!
:)

Thumbs up for taking on such a huge project!

I have tagged 3 ELWs within 100ly from Colonia, and 2 POI, a 4.21g world and a ringed AW with a moon on close orbit - although these are quite probably more than 25ly away from the nearest station, so won't qualify.
I will take my time think about naming the ELWs. :)

Came up with a naming system for systems/stars that's close to one of the methods used IRL. So names look like real names, while giving a hint at who discovered them and at their location, or a special feature, paying tribute to a person or mythological character (preferably in last resort). I use a 'prefix' made of the first 2 or 3 letters of the discoverer's name, followed by the actual name, in Latin, Greek, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, Maorr - and other languages if that makes sense or sounds better. If the name is relative to a special feature of the star itself, I add its class Greek letter. See below some examples with the inhabited systems in Colonia:

EOL PROU LW-L c8-28 > H3 Alddalil (Arabic 'The Guide'; discovered by H347H)
EOL PROU LW-L c8-76 > Car Terocto (Latin 'Triple Eight' (8.88ly from Colonia; discovered by Carmey)
EOL PROU LW-L c8-133 > Ka Purvi Tara (Nepalese 'Eastern Star'; discovered by Ka_Gamer)
EOL PROU YD-W b17-5 > Mu Car Diogenis (Diogenis, greek philoshoper advocating self-sufficiency and freedom from conventions; discovered by Carmey; not reason for the 'Mu' besides that I think it sounds better with it)
EOL PROU LW-L c8-138 > Kappa Yu Kaopio (Hawaiian 'The Young' (K-class 296My; discovered by Yuksarr)
EOL PROU LW-L c8-306 > Ren Halim (Arabic 'The Visionary' > High-Tech economy; discovered by Ren)
EOL PROU YD-W b17-1 > Ta Sophia (greek for 'Wisdom', Balakor's Research; discovered by Tanj_Redshirt)

I think it's a good start; thoughts?

Beautiful as always. I think this deserves a bump. It's a good project for folks in Colonia to get involved in.

I like the system names. I'll show it to others and ask what they think.

But if you DO receive some discoveries that are "above and beyond" what you would usually find, you are always welcome to submit them to the Galactic Mapping Project for consideration there as well :).

25ly around Colonia, not many chances it's gonna happen ;)

Oh, I'll have a few for you shortly, btw.

Ah - I didn´t notice that there was a limit to 25 LY.

I were thinking that this survey might provide data for the Galactic Mapping Project to do a special feature on the wider Colonia region and thus update the description in the EDSM map with interesting POIs of the region:

- just like we have previously made a special feature on the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex.

Well upon discussion with Satsuma, linking GMP and CMP/LRS, which was my first plan, didn't seem worthy. So... *shrug*
