Colonisation questions for Frontier Unlocked

I thought maybe we could place all of our questions about Colonisation in one place - so there are higher chance to get answers for what we are interested in.
NO DISCUSSIONS please, there are threads for that. ONLY questions.

1. Can colonization beacon be bought only from a Space Station, or it could be also bought from an Outpost, planetary Settlements?
2. Can we choose from which Minor Faction (of those that are present in the system) we buy the beacon from? or is it only from the MF that owns the station/settlement?
3. Does player need to be of any reputation status with a MF to be able to buy a beacon? Or does MF need to be in a specific state?
4. What will carry over from a station and/or Minor Faction the beacon is bought from to the new system - initial Economy, Government, etc.?
5. Is it going to be possible to build an Asteroid Station (and/or Installations) in planetary rings? Any rings or only Metal/Rocky?
6. Apart from planet/moon being Landable, will there be any other restrictions on which body we are going to be able to build settlements?
7. What determines 10 LY limit? and why it can't be 15 LY or 20 Ly like Power Play?

  • Can a faction colonize multiple systems at once or is there a global cooldown/bgs phase like expansion.
  • Is the (10Ly or whatever it ends up being) range for expansion a direct range or a box range like expansion.
  • Can you colonize from systems that don't have large stations and only have outposts or surface ports.
  • Will you give exact details/documentation on what gives systems slots to build in before the beta launch or is this something we should be prepared to reverse engineer?
  • How is colonization limited to the bubble, range from Sol? some other criteria that could be summarized?

- Will non-player factions settle into colonized regions, and adopt system-related names, like / [System] / [Color] / [Adjective] / [Group], as already exists in the bubble, or will system outposts/(non-architect)ownership be designated in the way of Fleet Carriers?

- Will there be a way to use outposts or beacons to highlight points of interest for Buckyball racing?

- Will we need extra materials for building surface outposts if the region of interest has, say, geysers or high gravity?

- Will certain systems over time be subject to Pilots Federation Local Branches, or even the Colonia Council?

- How would cooperative or factions outside of players factor in systems? Will the proximity to nearby non-player governed systems (like dictatorships or anarchies) affect the well-being of the systems we help design?

Does any stage of the colonisation process itself have the potential to generate income to the player, or only through secondary activities such as doing missions in the new system or using the economy that has been built for onward trading?
eg. Being paid for cargo deliveries rather than them being donations, cash rewards for hitting certain system completion goals, etc.

If no, does FDev anticipate that as the colonisation game-loop won't be self-sustaining/rewarding then players will have to take 'time off' from colonization to grind credits elsewhere to pay for it?

  • What is the minimum range between settlements? Does it depend on a size of the body or anything else?
  • Is there a limit to how many settlements can be build on one planet/moon?
  • Is there a limit to how many Stations/Outposts/Settlements/Installations one System can have, apart from the number of available bodies?

- How will planetary POI appear in the system? Can player build them, or select a place for them to be randomly generated/placed in? If any Yes - what types of POI are available and what is the minimum range they can be from a settlement? (Depending on a range, these could be useful for anyone who would want to create stories/themes in their system, as well as markers for Racing, etc.)

- Will it be possible to get something special in the System - Engineer, Interstellar Factors, Maga-Ship, Material Trader, Tech Broker?

We already know the answer to 7, FDEV determine the range limits and nothing else, they have decided at 10ly for now but that may change.
...Because players are second class, or worse, beings in the Elite universe. No NPC has ever had these restrictions and there is no Lore rationalization for it.

It is the same folderol as NPCs going to a shipyard to buy parts, but players can Only acquire them by "salvage".

1. Will the colonized system contain only the faction you choose to colonize with or will more be carried over from nearby systems?
2. Will we able to name the stations, settlements and by proxy rename the system and planets?
3. Will the initial colonization faction(s) be entrenched in the system or can they be retreated as per normal BGS rules?

  • Can colonies be built in the bubble or just the edges - can we colonize the empty systems near Sol even if they're worthless.
  • Can colonies built near the systems that make special goods (Energy Grid Assembly, Emergency Power Cells, Magnetic Emitter Coil etc) in theory manufacture those goods (in practice it's unlikely because the remaining uncolonized systems in the bubble aren't capable of sustaining any reasonable production probably)
  • Will there be other ways to manufacture those goods
  • What about Onionhead Gamma Strain - can player colonized stations manufacture that, is it still up to the RNG whether a station/system can make it?

  • Will there be any protection for players who want to chain-colonize systems up to their desirable system so that system can't be stolen after so much work? For example, if Colonisation Contact is available only on the following Thursday - make it available only to the Architect for that week, or make Colonisation Contact available as soon as all materials for the main Starport are delivered for the Architect and on the following Thursday for everybody else.
  • Will there be an option to transfer the Architect status to another player?

  • In previous Frontier Unlocked - building will require 'materials' - Does it mean commodities, or also actual Engineering materials?
  • Who pays for delivering commodities/materials for constructions - Minor Faction the beacon was bought from, Architect, some Colonisation Pilots Federation initiative?

I think this may be one of the reasons for the 10LY range. The controlling faction of where you buy the beacon gets transferred over and then other factions can expand in from nearby systems.
That is most likely reason that came from discussions in other threads. But all of that are our speculations. Would be nice to get detailed information from Frontier about that and all other questions we might have.

We already have many threads with discussions. That is why this thread - to ask questions ONLY - so maybe it would be easier for Community Managers, Developers to find questions, we as a community are interested in getting answers for, in one easy to navigate thread, instead of digging them up in countless discussions posts - that could up our chances to get more meaningful information.

If anyone wants to discuss and speculate about possible answers for these questions - there are Thread, Thread, Thread, Thread, and many others, one can even quote a message from this thread and post a reply in any other thread.

We still have a month until Frontier Unlock. If anyone comes up with a question they are interested in - post it here. Thank you!

Hi :)

What is the roadmap for Colonisation, is the intention by Frontier to release in full or part of the feature into the live game sometime this year (2025).

Jack :)

  • Will those players who are physically able to play the game immediately after the thursday maintenance break have an advantage over those who are not (eg. due to sleep or work, or other commitments)? In other words, if you are really looking forward to colonizing a particular system before anybody else, do you need to take a break from your work or wake up in the middle of the night to be there immediately after the maintenance break in order ensure you get that system?
  • Will we be able, at least at some point (eg. after some future update), to terraform "candidate for terraforming" planets in colonized systems?
  • Will a lone player be able to colonize a system in one week with a moderate amount of cargo transport work?
