Color Blind Mode

I have been playing this game since it was released and I still can't believe that 4 years later the only way to change the HUD color is by experimenting with an XML file. I am Red/Green color blind and the default reddish HUD is useless to me. A Yellow/Blue HUD would be fantastic. There are a lot of games coming with color blind graphics options built in to the game nowadays, The Witcher 3 being one of the best in my opinion, I can't believe that it would be that hard of an option to implement. After a lot of experimenting with the GraphicsConfiguration.xml file I have come up with a color scheme that seems to work well for me. Don't ask me what all the colors are but they are different enough that I can at least tell enemies from friendlies and looks decent enough too. Even if a full color blind option isn't implemented but a different color scheme for enemies and friendlies would be great. Red for Enemies, Blue for Friendlies and Yellow or White for neutral. The standard Red for enemy and Green for friendly has to be abolished. So many people, men especially, have some form of color blindness and we like to play games. It's about time all games come with some form of alternative color scheme built in so we can enjoy games as much as people with normal color vision.

Trying to fully impart color blindness to someone with normal color vision is damn near impossible. But I'll try to explain just a little of what it's like for me. I can see red and I can see green depending on the shades of those colors. Or at least what I perceive as red and green. Stop signs look red to me. Grass looks green. The shade of green used on a traffic light looks white to me though but I don't have any problem differentiating them from the red and yellow traffic lights so it's not a big deal that I don't see that shade of green correctly. Pinks and purples are brutal for me to distinguish most of the time. Once again it's very shade dependent. Most of the time I perceive purple as blue and pinks can look red, pink or even purple to me. I know, it's weird. The last example I'll leave you with is a rainbow. Anyone with normal color vision should see 7 colors in a rainbow. I see 2. Yellow and blue. That's it. So now take those issues and try interpreting tiny little red and green dots on a radar to try and figure out who the hell is an enemy and who is a friendly. It's bloody impossible.

If you've never taken a color blindness test and are curious, click on the following link:

If you click on each test plate it will tell you what normal color vision sees and what red/green color blindness sees. It's pretty interesting/frustrating.

I honestly doubt that this will make anyone at FDev sit up and take notice and start working on implementing a change but I did feel it was worth mentioning cause it can be incredibly frustrating dealing with color blindness in day to day life, let alone playing games. So I will implore FDev to please make all of your color blind customers happy and make this change to the in game HUD. Can it really be that difficult to do?

Colourblindness in gaming is a big issue and needs to be addressed, +1 for supporting it. :)

I'm hoping FD are teasing HUD colours in the new update, but I do hope they release a free colourblind colour scheme for you and other colourblind CMDRs to use.

Agreed on this in so many ways and yes FD are taking way too long to address this, man it’s been 4 years.

FD come on.

I always appreciate games a lot more if I find color-blind-settings, even though I do not need them. Having played with the color matrix in the configuration file myself, I found that it can be rather disorienting and dangerous if friends and enemies are almost indiscernible.

@Lestat. Easy to say go buy color blind glasses. Unlike prescription glasses that are guaranteed to make you see better, Enchroma color blind glasses do not come with such a guarantee. They are only effective for approximately 80% of color blind people. I, unfortunately, fall in the other 20%. They are very expensive and I was not about to pay $400 American (I'm Canadian) for a pair of glasses that, when they were first made available, could only be ordered online and there was no guarantee that they would work for me. Plus, when they first came out, they could only be worn outside. They now offer indoor glasses and when a local optometrist finally started offering them for sale I went there immediately to try them out. Much to my disappointment they were not the solution I was hoping for. Even though I don't see the world in black and white, my red/green color blindness is pretty severe apparently. I have been following scientific research regarding color blindness for quite awhile and I am always excited to read about advancements. Hopefully one day they will come up with a 100% fix for this. Until that point I continue to read about the research and will always try out any new advancements if made available to myself. I would love to see the world the way someone with normal color vision can see it. However, for now, I have to deal with it the way it is.
