Combat aftermath/black box question...

Greetings All,

Just now I checked out a "combat aftermath threat 1" I popped in expecting salvage and maybe a fight, some guy popped up on speakers (startled the hell out of me), and said that a ship was lost and they needed help finding her......o.k. fine, the only thing on radar was a black box. So I assumed I was supposed to scoop it up, and they would tell me to take it somewhere or it would transmit to them and hunky dory. Nope.....it started to decode and failed, then Mr. Guilt Trip came on and said that the info could have saved lives, too bad I was only in this for myself. I am confused....what does one do under this type of circumstance? There was no ship, would my ship have scanned it had I stopped in front of it like the nav beacon? Now I have a BBox can I sell it? It doesn't say 'Illegal'.....soooo....sell it or toss it?

Thanks for any help!

You're supposed to accept the job via your inbox first. If you don't do that you can't decode that box and fail. Same with the scenario with the dead Anaconda if anyone else is wondering.

I was wondering what was going on with those as well. So knowing that you have to accept it via the inbox is very helpful! Thank you :)

Hm, I thought the UI elements involved were pretty clear and obvious. Maybe they need to animate them a bit more when they pop up to draw the eye.

Not obvious and can somehow end up in a sub-menu that's not the accept mission bit especially if few chats going on, local, wing & squadron for example.

The amount of pointless comm text chatter over there has some pretty well conditioned to ignore it altogether. Easy mistake to make.

If thousands of people's lives really depended on those Black Boxes in the Combat Aftermath Zones, they would at least be worth the effort of sending pilots a mission invite text in the Comms Panel, and Mr. Guilt Trip in Chat would sound a lot less blasé and a lot more agitated about those people, when you supposedly doom them by failing to do the right thing with the Black Box. It's not like he tries to plead for them or anything.

There's no mission. There are no thousands of people depending for their lives on the information in that Black Box. It's bull. When I find Black Boxes in Combat Aftermath Zones, I just use them for target practice. ;)(y)

I just had this happen to me, which is how I found this thread. I started playing a few days ago, it was completely non-obvious that I had to accept. There was a notification in the message window, but that seems to constantly be getting an exclamation point so I ignored it, especially since missions in the new pilot zone are only given at bases. I thought the notification was for the text I could see on screen (the "hey we lost a ship"). Is there any way to get this mission again, or was this a one-time thing and it's gone forever?

Edit: It popped up again in the same system, just found another "combat aftermath" in the FSS.

It should bring up a message on the comms - but it should be obvious, as in, there's a whole mission accept/deny box that fills the comms window - like when you choose a side in combat zones.

Did that now come up? cos... it should!

It only appeared when I actually selected the comms window (after looking at this thread). When I arrived at the signal location both times, it was just the text of what the lady said in the comms, no accept/reject buttons. The comms window seems to get the notification exclamation mark every time I enter a new system, because it tells me "you've entered [system name] chat", so I ignored the notification mark. But now I know to either clear that on entering every system, or to double check comms when I get something that seems like a story.

There is another scenario where you are asked to scan a ship, again you have to accept the mission before doing so. Once the ship is scanned, DO NOT shoot it for target practice. You will become WANTED and have a trip to an Intersteller Factor to pay your fine . . . . (I know, I was that pilot . . . . . :):))

Supposed to.... :devilish:

EDIT: there's no way to fail the anaconda scenario, as far as i can tell :(
