Dropped into a combat aftermath signal source. There’s a ship nearby that someone wants data from. All I can find is a black box. If I take the black box, they say I’m selfish but don’t know how to read it to fulfill the request. Tried composition scanner, discovery and the data link (in both modes, hard points deployed), I’m close to it but only discovery will fire. Using correct key bind and confused…….

Drop in. Wait for them to message you. Then take the box.
Maybe ……but I was in the instance with the box in front of me all the time I was originally posting, taking photo etc. the message was received as soon as I dropped in. No second message received, eventually scooped the box and decryption failed……
Yes, IIRC it works similar to a space Combat Zone. Jump in, use the chat menu to accept the job and then get the black box.
The answers you have both given sound good, but I never saw a tick box for accepting. Maybe I had to change chat modes to see it?
ive just done couple jack winters is right the message should appear.
The accept/deline mission buttons should be at the bottom of the message in your inbox, then it's a matter of using the data scanner on the ship's beacon; As soon as decryption is done, the mission should auto-complete.
(EDIT: I stopped by a pair of these in the last week, and in both cases the ship was drifting intact just ahead of me, where I popped out of supercruise, outside the debris field, which felt kind of odd, since I recall always having had to painstakingly sift through the field for the beacon previously...)
