Combat / Assassination Missions = Negative Rep?

OK so I'm trying to make it as a combat pilot. I have lots of money so the main reward I want is reputation. However the only combat missions I have got to work to give me positive Rep are the Kill x amount of pirates.

Assassination missions EVERY time give me negative rep against the main faction I took the job from. The main problem seems to be that they are asking me to go kill a target who also belongs to that main faction. This just does not make sense at all. Why would that faction ask me to kill a target then fall out with me about it? The missions says it gives a huge rep boost, but taking negative rep when killing the target does not make sense.

This leaves the only combat mission for a 'good guy' to be hunting pirates. Even main factions are asking you to kill authority ships giving you negative rep yet again.

Assassination = Neg Rep
Killing Authority = Neg Rep
Killing traders = Can be positive if you're careful...but not so fun to kill a hauler in a powerful ship...
Killing Pirates = Can be positive if you're careful who you take down.

This seems like such a simple yet huge, huge problem. Is there something I am missing? Is this a bug? Intentional? I REALLY want to get back into Elite but is the game even working after 6 months of release?

If you are committing crimes you are going to lose rep. Bounty Hunting (inc. missions), doesn't lose rep, nor does assassinating wanted targets. The assassination missions that are safe to take are usually, pirate lords, criminals, escaped prisoners, rebels, terrorists and usually deserters. Don't take ones asking you to retire defective equipment, give someone who 'been flying a desk too long' some action or missions to improve their bottom line, unless you want to lose rep.

Thanks for the advice Trafalgar, I'll definatly check out those particular ones and see how they go. I think it still needs work though about how the missions effect rep.

I had 1 last night that told me to kill pirates in a system. Went to said system and the targets that were showing as "Missions Target" were either Fed agents or Private Security services. It's confusing and frustrating how this works. But being the only Space Sim out yet I want to keep at it.

I also kinda noticed that assassination missions will try to give you targets of neighboring system factions. However, it won't do this if the only major system in the area is the one you're in.

I've noticed that some of the powerplay targets (the fed agents, Sirius security etc.) show up as mission targets for the piracy missions. Don't bother with them (unless there are no better targets), as they have really low bounties (400cr for an Elite Python, someone is having a laugh).

Unfortunately I had to kill them, there were literally no pirates showing up as missions targets. I was there for about an hour hunting that 1 mission. I ended up with a bounty on me for each 1 I killed too. We could do with a guide of which missions are safe and which are bugged for negative rep. Especially with rep decay we need all the missions we can get.

Are you pledged to a powerplay faction? If not that is probably why you got a bounty.

No I didn't bother with that yet. Main thing that puts me off is the decay if I decide to take a break. Also not sure how it will effect my rep if these standard missions are effecting it negatively. I'm not sure PP has anything to offer for me I need to look into it more. I just want missions and adventure.

Unfortunately Assassination missions lack the definitive "target type" that other missions have, like "Kill 10 pirates" or "Kill 10 Traders".

They also should be better selected based on your rep with said faction of the station and major faction. It seems very out of place to offer a mission to kill a high ranking target for the faction you have high favor for, instead of a target you are against. Even deserter targets, or those that are in some way involved in a Coup d'etat , etc. are considered "bad targets" for your faction. It makes much more sense for you to be required to be no more than "unfriendly" or neutral with a faction to get an assassination mission that could lower your rep with them, but not allow it for higher reps; and in either case it needs to be displayed in a much better way what is going on..and how it affects your standings with things.

Mission's in general are too generic and filled with "lore-fluff" that covers up information or lacks to provide it at all. You can have all that..but the next half of the screen should include all the absolute specifics, like its suppose to. Instead of all the redundant double lines of what faction offered the quest, yadda yadda.

The whole mission system needs yet another overall; one that actually overhauls it and improves rather than doing absolutely nothing lol.

I came back after 1.3 just for the mission overhaul but it seems nothing has changed unfortunately. I backed the game in Beta after all the talk on the DDFs about espionage missions and other interesting stuff. Instead we get a very very simple structure that doesn't even work. Such a shame as the game had great potential. Still, I will try to work out what does actually work and try to enjoy it while the other space sims are being made.
