Newcomer / Intro Combat Flight Maneuvers BFM/CFM Question

Hi All

New player and i was just wondering are "real life basic and combat flight maneuvers" valid in ED , not taking in account speed and hight facter. (Energy Management).

A few movements came to mind which might help out & thought i would ask for advice and any ideas.

Lead/Pure/Lag Pursuit

Immelmann

Split S

Barrel Roll & Barrel Roll attack

Low & High Yo Yo - (Using throttle)

Flat & rolling scissors - (Using throttle)

Thanks all, Roberts.

In short, yes some of it is. Definitely barrel roll and rolling scissors will come into play a lot with the NPC. Low and High yo-yo won't be employed really as there is no addition of gravity forces to necessitate the maintenance of energy in the same way. Lead and lag pursuit will stand you in good stead, but remember that if you have turrets or gimballed weapons on board, you don't need to lead your target to have a valid firing solution, but it will help with staying in the blind spot of most (none turreted) NPC. Be aware though, that boost works instantly in game and afterburn still requires acceleration, therefore, a target that you are leading at an offset angle will boost out of your arc of fire if you get the lead angle wrong.

That all being said, I am not an awesome combat pilot in game (Deadly ranked), but I can more than hold my own in most encounters, you may find that some of the tactics mentioned above are of some use, I just don't use them as I found them to be largely useless in a 6DoF environment.

The biggest difference in ED is that the lack of gravity and atmosphere means that traditional flight manoeuvres are largely redundant. Aircraft manoeuvres need to take into account an aircraft maintaining lift - not a problem in space. Manoeuvres like an Immelmann and Split S start from level flight and execute a change of direction returning you to level flight. When there is no up or down it doesn't matter which way up you come out of the move, and when there is no ground there is nothing down there to avoid.

In ED flight-assist off is by far the biggest thing to master in combat, and that is something that has no real-life comparison.

I would also add the use of Reverse thrust which clearly has no viable aircraft comparison, and lateral thrusters combo (e.g. Down thrust with Reverse)

If you're playing vs real people (not AI), then maybe. If you're in a fast/maneuv ship vs a slower, less maneuv ship, then lag if you gimbal or pure if fixed.

Throttle in ED revolves mostly around staying in the blue zone for max manuev, or if FA off, then using thrusters/boost to position yourself. Just going FA off w/o boost will increase your pitch rate.

But most fighting with AI and even real players is just jousting.

Other 'tactics' are:
FA off face tanking - circle jerk where you're both FA off thrusting down/up facing each other.
If other guy is less maneuv (or new) FA off l/r thrust to circle him as he tries to pitch up. If someone tries this on you, one possible counter is to reverse thrust and boost in to get out of his circle.

Good luck.

Thanks for the responses all, i also thought it would be more about throttle input and turn rate (in the blue) but had to ask as i tried out the CQC and saw some pilots doing a few maneuvers but no solid tactics apart from the experienced pilots who were assist off and flipping about space  Still have to figure out the best config for xbox controller and eventualy assist off.

Thanks again.. Roberts
