Combat Flight Sim - recommendations Please

Can anyone recommend any modern Combat Flight Sims - I've got a xmas present to buy, and no idea which of this genre are any good.

I only play Elite Dangerous and Civ V on my PC, so any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers,
Nick

DCS

2.5 should be released in the next few months too, which will be nice.

Invest in the A10-C (emphasis on the C) pack -they often have sales, so wait for one. It's *very* involved. The base game is free, along with a couple of planes.

GO GO GO GO GO!

Edit - Ninja'd!

DCS, Falcon 4 (with BMS), and Enemy Engaged (old game but still unmatched for it's realtime online campaign and no load times).

DCS is *the* combat flight sim.

Falcon 4 is good, but you're spoiled with DCS really. Just go get it! :)

Different games imho. Yes DCS has a much richer lineup (and Helicopters, which for me is the big one), but the Falcon dynamic campaign is unmatched. There's nothing like it in DCS, just a sequence of static scenarios, and it's not even in the development pipeline to address it. Which in itself is a blessing since they yet have to even find the time to update the Caucasus map to the new engine...

So for single player campaign with dynamic frontlines, Falcon is the only game in town for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for all the replies, looks like DCS is the one to go to, I'll also have a look at Falcon 4.

I'll have a go myself with the freebie version, and then look at the AC-10 pack

Cheers,

I won't recommend a module. The A10C is good but it's no fighter.

I always say its best just to grab Flaming Cliffs 3 to start. It's cheap and it gives you a lot of variety.

But then, I'm a weirdo who wants ships compatible with Combined Arms, so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

Nope, I wanted to fly a heli and I bought my heli. Been too long since they gave me Gunship and I needed my fix badly.

Fair one, although I think when I bought FC3, there werent any Helo modules :).
All Im just saying is for, what is it now, £20? You get a basic taster of all fixed wing roles.

Agreed. I'd recommend FC3 to anyone getting into DCS. Fair selection of classic jets, handy for brain-dead arena MP servers if that's your thing, and even those simplified models are a pretty good intro to modern flight sims. It was state of the art "not that long ago".

Yes, I don't think armament and sensors are simplified on these. Only the cockpit. However, people like me might find the simplified cockpits quite complicated when they forget all the key bindings.

That's another reason why I love the Huey. Apart from the cold start sequence and radio if/when needed, it's all about cyclic, collective/throttle and yaw. No fancy electronics in the way, just fine coordination between the axis. Beautifully old school.
