Combat hints needed

Please... I am not asking for the game to become easier, I am asking for me to become better, so keep the thread civil please :)

I have no problem landing at all, but dogfighting is .. ugly :D

I am trying to solo missions, and after about 20 tries I have only been able to down 1 of the 4 ships in mission 4.
The other three proceed to make mincemeat out of me in short order.

I could use a few hints on how to dogfight better since I apparently am a slow learner have lousy reflexes or both.

Firstly, I seem to end up in a pitch fight with my current target where I just keep pulling the stick back to get him in my sight, this can just go on until I am tired or one of the other two ships hit me.
If I try to do these turns with little power, I am a sitting duck for the other ships.
If I do it with half power or so, my target can keep evading me, and if I try it at full power my turn radius is so big that he gets before me.

How do YOU turn and wiggle to get behind your enemy while avoiding other enemies?

Are there any good videos on dogfighting? or maybe any other posts?

I am pretty lousy at targeting as well, but that, at least, is improving the more I practice.

The most simple hints I can give are learn to use flight assist as much as possible on and off. Secondly find the sweet spot for maneuvering speed.

You're doing the right thing and have the right attitude so don't worry about asking.

Basically just keep practising and plugging away. You'll get more used to the controls and the feel of the ship the more you practice. Keep this up and you'll be fine :)

Also use Slide controls. with the basic turning. Other then that Practice Practice and More practice.

If in combat against an NPC, who suddenly turns invulnerable due to multiplayer connection/authority issues - don't turn your back on them. Pump a heck of a lot into then for another minute or so, so that if they are still vulnerable, but just not visibly taking damage, hopefully they will still be destroyed, and you don't get caught out.

I just forgot this in the Federal Distress scenario - and ended up with an NPC I though was dead in the water destroying my poor Sidewinder. :(

For starting off, don't bother with flight assist off, it only complicates things.

Best things that have helped me so far is a flight stick (makes it much more easy to navigate and stay on people's tails) and gimballed lasers. The damage output of the gimballed lasters is lower, but the increased chance of actually hitting is worth a lot.

The thing about combat is - most people think in two dimensions. They want to get their target ahead of them and in their gunsights. This is natural.

The problem with that, is that it's wrong.

Your target can go wherever it likes. You don't have to follow it! Reverse back a bit, slide up, rotate around, you have 3km's in which to deal damage.

Use all dimensions available to you.

my personal fav...when in a tight turning fight... i'll pull along with the target... then i'll apply upward maneuvering thrust... that will bring the target into view most times... on the occasion that your opponent is doing the same.. reverse the Upward thrust with down thrust... you'll not come in sight of your opponent.. but you will gain some distance from him... which will allow you some maneuvering room.

Yeah, and is it me or is the AI a LOT smarter than when the alpha first came out? I was playing again for the first time in a long while the other night, and got my ass handed to me badly. Before I never even broke a sweat, except when trying to speed run the 4 federal ships in solo.

It took me about an hour to re-adjust but eventually I learned that flying straight is just a bad idea. Unfortunately, evasive maneuvering does nothing for me since the AI shoots like a laser beam, but learning to get more shots on target was vastly more valuable in the long run.

Apply the downward thrust and put on reverse. That will put your target in the cross hair real quick..

Hi ParaB, I'm trying to beat Crimson Triumph and came across a post where you suggest your video with comments turned on. How do I turn on comments. I tried the CC thing bust it said the video did not contain captions.

Thanks

When you watch the video clock on the "settings icon" (the little cog icon in the lower right corner) and make sure captions are switched on.

If you can't see the captions that's strange. Working fine here.

Can't see them on the iPad. I'll try again on the PC.

Must be an iOS issue. Worked just fine on the PC. Thanks for the vid, I'll give your suggestions a try
