Combat...I'm tired...Set-up

Greetings commanders,
I have been doing only delivery missions from the start, avoiding any combat-related ones. After I got some money, I've equipped my Cobra Mk III with some 40k cr Pulse Lasers and cheap cannons.
I checked around a Navigation Beacon and began a fight with Viper. I've nearly died here, only got out with 27% Hull. So now I wanna now, which weapon setup is the best for Cobra Mk III, and are Cannons worth buying? God, I expected combat there to be like in Battlefront (pew-pew ) , and now I have to learn so much...
 
Kinectic weapons are best put in the medium slots but I prefer multicannons.
Also, Elite is way different than Battlefront so don't think you can just pew pew your way unless you know how to fly and I advise training FA off flight.

Thermal weapons (lasers) are generally more effective against shields. Kinetics weapons (cannons) are more effective against hulls.

I have my pulse lasers on fire group 1, and my cannons on fire group 2. Fire group 1 to bring down shields, when I hear 'target shields offline' I switch to fire group 2 for the hull.

You can also use the targeting system to attack specific modules on the ship, so you can focus on the powerplant to disable the ship before finishing them off (useful if you have more than one target).

There is no 'best setup' in Elite as there are so many different scenarios; I would suggest you have a look around at the wealth of videos on YouTube if combat is your bag. Also, start saving for the Vulture!
 
I'd be greatful if someone could advide how to set multi firegroups in addition to my discovery scanner.

at the moment L2 is my discovery scanner and R2 is my default weapons. But if i were to outfit another weapon in one of the weapon slots how can I differentiate between the two? Cheers

Definitely check out the vids. Shorthand for this is to go to the right-hand panel in your ship and tab over to the fire-groups. There you set up firegroupings and select which button sets off which weapon/scanner. So firegroup 1 would have the discovery scanner set to 1 (L2) and maybe heatsink or whatever else set to 2 (R2). Setting those up automagically opens up firegroup 2 which you can set up as lasers on 1 and cannons on 2 (or however you want it). This in turn opens up firegroup 3 which you can ignore or put more crap into like a bounty scanner, shield cell, etc. Words are hard to imagine what is going on so stick to the vids... :)
