Combat Logging and Murder

Why is it moral and ethical to perma ban someone for combat logging and not for murdering a commander that didn't have his weapons out?

A rather loaded question as it implies a degree of severity rarely seen, but the former act is one of a player cheating at the game (by engaging in a prohibited out-of-game activity to gain an in-game advantage), while the latter is legitimate gameplay between one in-game character and another, to be dealt with by in-game forces, whether those be retaliatory CMDR actions or the C&P system.

no it isn't. someone who menu logs is someone who uses in-game activity to gain an in-game advantage, much like engineering. The menu is part of the game. The act of murdering a human player, while legitimate in-game, is badly looked down upon in real life, so why is it the other way round in-game? This is because the in-game penalties are too low for such actions, and overengineered ships have too little to lose engaging in such acts. The reason for this is due to the way missions are designed around the factions and system states. That is the real dilemma OP is having when asking his question.

on the other hand, task killing is using an out-of-game activity to gain an in-game-advantage. However, this is not without limitations, as it also takes time to switch and end the task. Please stop generalising and being judgy by putting negative connotations on things about this topic. If FDev has said it isn't an issue, then it isn't.

What you have said is like saying murdering people is morally and ethically right, but players using all available means at their disposal for running and escaping is not. What's wrong with wanting to survive? Does this game not invoke large amounts of emotions when you play it? Why else would people post about their feelings when encountering something unknown?

It's comments like this that makes me feel this community wants to shut themselves off from new players, which is stupid imo.

Logging to the menu is not combat logging. Do not confuse the two.

Also, please don't necro threads :)
