Combat mining - damn good fun!

So, having spent much of my Elite career bounty hunting around the bubble in various combat ships I've been looking for different things to do in order to mix it up a little. I'd spent a bit of time a while back using a Clipper to trade my way from a Vulture to a FDL so didn't really want to be doing too much of that again - very much a 'means to an end' gameplay for me, my attention span can't really cope with the monotony. Once I'd A graded my FdL and made a few more millions I decided that I'd trade it in and go for the Anaconda to try the big ship experience. I'd heard about the Robigo thing, so part chopped the FdL in for an Asp, made my way out there and did a few missions in order to make the last bit of cash I needed to get a D rated Anaconda. As much as I enjoyed the cat and mouse experience it still didn't really light my fire since the NPCs were woefully inadequate at catching or stopping me. That said it made me some good coin, and I got my basic Anaconda. I've done a little more trading, but grew weary so decided to arm it and take it to a RES. Whilst not the best specced and I have to be careful what and how many I engage, it's still fairly good at taking out NPC's. So I figured why not sacrifice a little bit of internal space for limpets, and the two medium hard points for mining lasers? Put pulse turrets on the other hard points and I should theoretically be able to mine without having to worry too much...

So on with the build:

I found myself a metallic ring with pristine reserves and headed for the outskirts of a High Res area. Since I've never mined before it took me a little while to get my head around using the limpets to pick stuff up, but it wasn't long before I was burning up asteroids. Eventually I moved a little closer to the combat area - it wasn't long before I saw an NPC pirate start a cargo scan. I just ignored it, wondering what would happen. Sure enough, he lit me up. I just ignored the barrage, chucked 4 pips to shields and two to weapons and carried on. Eventually it started to take its toll, so I turned around to take a look - it was an Elite Clipper haha! Eventually the 5-0 turned up to assist and between my turrets, a bit of movement around the 'roid to minimise the incoming fire taken the Clipper was popped and I got a tasty 100k bonus. I carried on with this for an hour before having to call it a night and ended up with about 50t in gold, 20t in palladium and similar amounts of platinum/other minerals, not to mention a whole heap of bounty vouchers. Very enjoyable to do something a bit different, whilst still having a bit of combat mixed in. Perhaps when I get some upgrades I'll risk it in a Haz Res. I really wish I'd done mining a bit earlier - pays to get out your comfort zone now and then. :)

Does the HighRES have similar ore yields as the HazRES? I've tried mining in a HazRES a couple of times, but without the aid of the authorities, I had to run away after each try. My D-rated Python was not even close to being able to hold in front of wings of Clippers, Vultures and FASs.

I use a very similar build to this for HazRez mining :) And yes it's awesome.. The only thing I will say is I think you have too much cargo there compared to the number of collectors. In a HazRez you get a LOT of fragments and you want to collect as fast as possible and then move on. I use 256T Cargo on my Conda and have 13 collectors.

That's a great hint, will add another one to see how I go. Might not have enough power though, I'm pretty close to the edge as it is.

Ah yes, I do run mine with a bigger power plant (8C I think) and distributor.. Worth it though. Mine only has a laden jump range of 15LY, but you don't need as much on a miner as you do on a trader.. I quite a few turreted MC on mine too, they use a lot less power than pulse turrets.

Does a HazRez have a higher yield than an arbitrary other location (without NPC activity) in the same pristine ring?

Yes definitely, all the RES types do but HazRez yields the most. It's a little more than double the fragments per asteroid I think..

By the way, I can really recommend doing HazRez mining in a wing. I sometimes hire newish pilots from Eravate in Cobras etc and take them to Bhotho to act as wing protection in the RES there. Sometimes I get them to fit a single mining laser because each wing man gets their own set of fragments from an asteroid. That means you can get non-mining combat ships to help make more fragments. And then at the end they get the 5% trade dividend as well as any bounties they make. I also usually throw in a bit of Painite and transfer it to them. It's good fun :)

Just picked up my first Anaconda and made my first jump with it into a pristine metallic to do some mining. No res in this system, so I drop anywhere in the ring. I've just upgraded from an iClipper that I've mined with here earlier, almost every time I drop into the ring pirates show up. With the clipper I just boost away, but the Anaconda isn't so quick, so I got jumped by a vulture. I'd fitted turreted pulse lasers for this type of occasion, the 'conda is sooooo sssllooooooow turning, thankfully the turrets did the job and took him out and I got a 100k bounty voucher. Added a bit more fun to a rather boring trip, I might have to try this more often (once I'm more confident in the Conda's weapons ability).

Has this been verified? I get between 35-40 fragments per 'roid with the prospector limpet, and the 'roids vary in % of course but I'd estimate every 8th one (on average) is a 3p with over 20% (I've seen them up to 50-60 of a 3p) but probably on average 35%. I don't mine anything < 20%, with the old rig I'd get 192t of 3p in ~ 2 hours.

Curious is a hazres site yield is any better, it would have to be in order to offset the pesky pirates.

Thanks

This is when you need some friends in a wing covering your back. You get to mine in peace (mostly), and they get to rack up the bounties plus get a small trade bonus when you sell your mined materials.
