Newcomer / Intro Combat Ranking Up

Can someone please tell me what kills you need for each level in combat rank. I have the fandom wiki matrix for the individual kill multipliers but not totals.

As with most things in Elite - it's rarely about some easy number.
The only thing to focus on is to only kill ships with the same or higher rank than your own. That's what the multipliers are about.

As far as totals go, the only thing I can say is that it is a geometric series - to advance all the way to the next rank takes about as much as advancing from the start all the way to your current rank took. (i.e. advancing from Deadly to Elite takes the same amount of effort as advancing from Harmless to Deadly). It's a long haul.

surely there is a number for each? I think I have seen 3700 confirmed kills for master to dangerous? But is there not a matrix for them all?

It's not as simple as Number of kills, the rating of the target also plays a part. Some one will know better than me but only kills within a couple of ranks count to improving your rating. And are also weighted. So a novice killing an elite NPC will get a massive weighted bonus to their ranking, but in the inverse if you're elite killing a novice you get no rank update.
I imagine this is sensibly to stop you just slaughtering 'Easy' opponents to grind rank. :D

No, no matrix. If there were one, it would be so complicated it wouldn't be helpful anyway. :)
Each kill contributes a different amount if "XP" to your progress depending on their rank. 3700 may be a good average estimate, but it's likely "2000-5000", depending on what you are killing"

Also note that the kills must be achieved in fair combat (i.e. crime doesn't count - no trader slaughtering. The ship you kill must be wanted)

The higher the rank of the target above your own the more you gain for the kill but if you are higher ranked than the target you will get fewer points for the kill, if the target is ranked far enough below you the points will be next to nothing.

Of course if you use an NPC crewman to fly an SLF in combat the points for each kill will be halved until the NPC reaches Elite rank.

Okay, after a few minutes searching online, I found this table
NOTE: This was from 2019. The location I found it is the (Elite Dangerous Fandom Wiki Page - Combat Chart)
How Valid it still is remains to be seen, but probably fairly good.
ANOTHER NOTE: in the link I found in the Forums (Combat Scoring Rank) , it is stated that this is not entirely accurate, and I would take it as a guide, not Absolute Truth.

Ranks(tgt/playerHarmlessMostly HarmlessNoviceCompetentExpertMasterDangerousDeadly
Harmless1.000.750.500.250000
Mostly Harmless1.251.000.750.500.25000

Elite3.002.752.501.251.501.751.501.25
In the Chart, the top row is YOUR rank, the column down is your opponents rank.

Example: A Harmless Commander get the drop on an Elite Pirate and takes him out. That Commander will get 3.00 xp or 3% of something...it doesn't really get into it in what I found. But an Elite Commander starts Harp Seal Clubbing Harmless pirates, well, he is just wasting his time, fuel, and ammo, as they would get ZERO xp or percentage points, or so little that it amounts to nothing.

Now, as for how many of each you need to kill to get to the next level, or reach Elite...that depends on what level bad guys you kill, what percentage you get for each kill, how that all adds up to make a total of "X"...So as was stated, there is no true "Killing X number of bad guys WILL give you Elite" number that can be given. It is all a game of percentages and time.

Hope this makes sense...while it won't make it easier, at least you have an idea of how much work goes into reaching Combat Elite.

Even if the numbers aren't 100% accurate it still conveys the concept I explained badly above about the weighting factor. Thanks.
As far as I'm aware the weighting also applies to levelling up your active crew members based on THEIR current level not yours. Probably explains why one of my crew has nearly overtaken my own level. (Still at least they've earnt the millions they've had sitting on their or lurking bored whilst I'm mining... :D )

The relative scaling (weighting) of opponent value in that table is what the OP said they already had. What they are looking for as I understand it is the actual "kill points" value needed for each tier of promotion. I have no idea but I thought someone might, maybe @d8veh since he seems to have gone through the combat progression many times.

Was this ever confirmed?
I've read in a couple of different stating that NPCs actually still take half your XP (whether they need it or not) after they hit Elite.

Only one I found on quick search now, but I recall finding a few along these lines when I looked quite a while back.

I never looked into it as I had reached combat Elite before I ranked up a pilot.

In my case, in round numbers, 3000 kills to go from noob to Deadly, and 3000 kills to go from Deadly to Elite. As discussed above there are a number of factors, with flying in a wing and flying with minions among the factors that slow this progression. To achieve high rank fastest, it is best to kill high ranked NPCs, solo and with no fighter employed.
