Combat Ship Recommendations Wanted

I have 15mill CRs to my name and I am thinking of purchasing my first combat ship. I have little first hand experience with combat in this game and want to try it out especially since the devs have put so much work into it. Any recommendations what I should buy? Loadouts?

Vulture, upgrade power plant and distribution to A, dual class 3 pulse gimballed for easy pickings for NPCs. Mine is valued at about 20 million now but 10 of that is for a class shields and military grade armour so with 15 million you should be able to get everything else upgraded.

For that much I would go with one of three ships. Diamondback Scout, Vulture, or an Imp. Courier. All three are pretty good around that price point. You have to currently get serf for the Imp. Courier though.

If he only has 15 mill to his name a good vulture will be just out of reach. Kit out a viper.

No way - you can get started with a Vulture with that much. When the Vulture first came out, I only had 8 mil to my name and I made it work. It may be b or even c-rated, but it'll be a good start.

Edit: Also Vulture loadouts are simple - tank the shields. I opted for twin fixed burst lasers, but I only recommend that if you have really good aim.

Not by much though, I mean I can't put anything else into my Vulture and the only thing that isn't A rated is the thrusters due to power limitations and I'm sitting at 20 million, of course you'd want a couple buy backs saved at least and if you are just starting combat a fully fitted viper might actually be a better choice to start.

I'll second the vulture. You can kit it out pretty good for 15 million.

It's a total beast, and very maneuverable, a joy to fly. You'll want to stick to pulse lasers probably for sheer power management - power is a little bit of an issue and I recommend fooling around in a ship builder webpage to figure out your loadout. If you want to run shield cells or boosters or extras like a kws or interdictor, you're going to have to economize your power- thrusters are a good place, you can get away with D thrusters easily enough, and do things like shutting down your cargo scoop when your weapons're deployed.

Diamondback Scout, kitted out should cost just under 9mil.

It also has great range so you won't get that marooned feeling like in the Vulture or the Viper.

Vultures are good for making money fast, but they are so good they get boring fast, you just point at an NPC press fire and boom. Too easy. Get a Courier if you have the rep, they're great fun, or failing that a viper.

Common tactic to use SCB with a vulture is to stow hardpoints, turn on SCB while out maneuvering, then use it turn it off, and break out the hardpoints again. You don't have to sacrifice anything and just need to learn how to panel manage and all that jazz.

For 15 mill, you can get a mid-grade Vulture or a spec'd out Courier.

I'd recommend going with the Vulture since you'll have room to grow in it and its C3 hard points will get you more money, faster.

So for a good Vulture it sounds like about 25 mill is in order?

Ya cause you can save 5 million for buy backs, at 20 million my buy back is just over a million, doesn't get destroyed often but I like having a few in reserve. You can buy now for less than 5 though and put 7 or 8 into it and it will perform nicely.

The Viper was the ship that we all learnt to smash Anacondas with back in the day.

If you want a challenge then thats your ticket.

The Imperial Courier is awesome but makes assasination mission a bit easy.

DB Scout is a good shout.

True. That's what I meant, though. You really do have to think about your power priorities with the Vulture.. you can get away with a lot, for the cost of fiddling with it, though.

To the OP: If a vulture's too pricy, the viper really is a good substitute. Much less expensive, kind of a 'baby vulture'. Would help you figure out if you like pure combat ships for less creds.

Vultures range isn't bad for a combat ship, top FSD I have 15LY and fitTed a class 2 scoop so it's st least possible to travel far if needed.

Courier is underrated.

Tough blind spot in the Courier tho, right under the nose.

I like the Courier a lot, great shields, fast and with decent firepower, but oh that damn blind spot.

Not so much jump range, but the Fuel tanks are the limiting factor, IMO.
