Combat Training Demo

Howdy All,

I'm having a lot of fun with the little demo, but I have a question for those who have been in the Beta.

The last two tutorials are kicking my butt. :p I finally finished the supply strike, but with only 4% hull integrity remaining. I decided I'd come back to it later. The last one with the waves is reminiscent of the old 'Kobayashi Maru' scenario and I've yet to complete it.

So, my question to the skilled CMDRs here is; how common are those scenarios in normal play?

Thanks,
Darc

Last mission is on "Nightmare difficulty". Real game is not on the same level ;). Espec if you buy Gimbaled weapons.

If you finished 80% or 90% waves from last mission, you are prepared with good skill for Elite: Dangerous space ;).

But, my advice is, do not attack Anacondas with Sidewinder after start. ASP or Cobra are ok (Sidew., Eagle or smaller ships are ok too, of course), but when I meet Wanted Dangerous or Elite Anaconda, I simply run :D.

Nightmare difficulty it is indeed! lol

I suspected running was a good option in certain scenarios like what you've mentioned. :)

Thanks for the response!

As a keyboard user at this moment in time, I changed the A and D keys to roll and the mouse to yaw and was able to aim with ease after that, the mouse roll was too much for me.

I began play with keyboard & mouse, but ended up digging my old Saitek Cyborg Evo out of a closet and hooking it up. Combat instantly became manageable and more realistic. It refuses to remain calibrated though, so I may end up mapping things as you have to give it a go.

Thanks!

I've been playing with the keyboard and mouse, I've tried tweaking the controls and much as possible and have managed to get something pretty playable. I too found that the roll with the mouse was too sensitive but then I put the 'power curve' option up to around 50%. This means that small movements only have small affects on the roll, then as you push further with the mouse it speeds up. This makes it good for precision when firing but has speed for when chasing a target.

I've managed to get to the cobra on the last demo mission, its the 4th or 5th wave I think, and managed to get its hull down to around 20% but can't finish him off before he ends me, once he turns on you with a little bit of space he cuts right through my shields and takes chunks out of my hull.

Overall though enjoying it immensely, can't wait for the 16th!

This is exactly what's been happening to me.
I can usually get to this point with 100% hull (or at least better than 70%). I can also uually manage to strip its shields once and get one decent pass of firing with the multicannon on its bare hull...
But as soon as it manages to turn towards me, and it always does, it blitzes me in a single pass. If I'm not dead then I might as well be, and often I'll have crippled engines or a shattered windscreen, or both.
Nightmarish difficulty indeed.

Glad it's not just me then, it seems when he loses his shields he manges to either evade my fix beam laser (usually almost out of MC shells by this point) or he boosts and turns when I least expect it.

i think the key to beating him is to keep the distance down and out turn him, but he always seems to get away, I guess the cobras boost is much bigger than the sideys.

Out of interest what control method are you using?

I don't seem to have a problem running out of MC ammo. I'm pretty sparse with it unless their shields are down, only really using it if I don't have enough pips to weapons and the beam is struggling to recharge.
But the damn Cobra only needs one decent pass and it undoes all the good work. Doesn't matter how much ammo I've got when I'm rapidly decompressing in space!

I've got a Logitech Extreme 3D joystick, though I'm upgrading to a Saitek X-55 for Christmas...

Hmm, I need to use the gimballed MC on the fast moving fighters in the earlier wave and the sidey in the wave after them, so don't have much left once the cobra shows up, although I didn't run out until his health was below about 30-35% I think.

I was originally planning on getting a HOTAS setup but after playing the demo with the mouse I felt the controls were ok. Probably wait on until the january sales and see if I can get a bargain somewhere. :D
