combat tutorials sidewinder face off

I have beaten this once, but Im trying to get to the stage where I can complete this one easily and Im having the following problems

How do I target the opposing ship - On the left targeting display, I always have a globe, even when I am hitting the SW with my lasers (I can see the blue glow of its shields so I know Im hitting it)
All the online vids clearly show the SW in the status display with remaining shield info - I just have a globe :S

2nd problem is that we always seem to meet face on, I never seem to be able to get behind the SW, we attack flying towards each other, I then try to loop the loop to get behind and we are back to flying towards each other for 3 seconds firing wildly.

I know I need to practice and I am and will, but Im missing something over the targeting...

it looks like you are not locking the target. Use the 'lock target ahead' control for it.

Head ons are common, but you can avoid them.
What i usually, do is thrust DOWN during a head on. Once you pick up speed the negative pitch of your opponent usually doesnt keep up unless he rolls around. At a certain point, thrust forward and you get under the ship. Keep pulling your stick backwards to keep him in your sights and range. Throttle foward untill its in the blue sector (sweet spot for maneuvring) and pips to engine to make a quick turn around. When you are close, pips default and quickly all pips to weap and burst away while he's close. Some times, when you are under his belly, thrusting up keeps you under him for a few seconds.

Dont think you are flying a plane! Make most use of the thrusters and pips. I'll try to add a video soon to explain the above ingame.

It looks to me like you should take a long look at the controls window and configure everything to your liking. In the beginning, I only used the mouse for steering, but now I have the pitch/roll on both the mouse and WASD. This helps a lot (for example), although I hope to get a Joystick soon.

Will keep an eye out for the vid.
Have yet to use thrusters, it has been all joystick and engines so far, will try them with the waste disposal scenario and try to get a feel for what they do as I thought they were just for landing at stations.

Back off to practice, will report back

yeah, to beat the AI you 100% need to learn to be able to thrust in more than one direction at once :)

Don't worry, it will come together more quickly than you think. You might struggle with it for a few days/whatever, then all of a sudden you nail it. Starts to become second nature then ;-)
