Combat without Hotas

Some of the best PvP players fly with a keyboard and mouse.

The mouse is a pointing device and is since it's used with fingertip control, whereas a joystick is used with the wrist and elbow, I would suggest that it's possible to get a higher degree of control out of a mouse.

Homunculi images show just how much more processing power is dedicated to the fingers than the wrist or elbow:

With that said, there are some excellent pilots who use a HOTAS. I suspect that rather than you just being inherently bad at fighting in this game, you're missing some important part of the practice.

!. Do you put the throttle at 50% to maximise your turns?
2. Do you use boost properly in conjunction with directional thrusters to control your distance from your target?
3. Do you juggle pips properly? 4 pips to shields when taking fire!
4. have you mapped yaw to the mouse X axis and roll to the keyboard?
5. Are you getting jumped by multiple NPCs when running missions, or is this in RES combat?

Where is the genitalia in that pic? ;)

Pips management.

(At first keep in mind i use Hungarian QVERTZ keyboard instead of QWERTY. So For a starter i have some extra keys plus Y and Z switched places.)

The problem with this if you don't reconfigure your keyboard layout than you need to replace your hand to the arrow keys from around WASD buttons. And this takes time the less you need to move your hands the faster you can push the buttons. ;) So i remapped pip control to ctrl+ W,A,S,D.

heatshink, shield cells, chaff, ECM; Shift + E, D, S, A, Stealth? For safety reasons i placed to Shift + 0 (note in my keyboard 0 is before 1) so it can't be accidentally triggered.

Roll left / right Q, E Strafing controls; W, A, S, D And also because of this change i placed to the mouse to turn left/right up down.

Speed up, slow down? R, F

50% 0 -50% speed V,C,X

100% -100% speed CTRL + V, X

Supercruise / system jump; Í, CTRL + Í

Y flight assist ON / OFF

Star map and system map - , .

Mouse mapping;

Button one and two remains unchanged. Button 3, target ahead. CTRL + Button 3 headlook.

Button 4,5 previous / next enemy target.
CTRL + 4,5 sub system targeting.
Also Added The target next previous ship to Shift + 4,5

Fighter orders? Unchanged, although i thinking about to move em to SHIFT + 1,2,3,4,5

What i missing from the current control opportunities to place the speed changing to the mouse wheel. ED is not dealing with it as how he must be, so instead of a constant acceleration, deceleration? The speedmeter just move a very little up and down when you rolling the wheel.

About the less fight oriented control keys? I left them in the right side of the keyboard time loss is does not matter too mutch.

(Note; and i still not used left ALT)

Ok. thanks for that. I might do some of what you have.

Wow! I had no idea how many different ways people have to fly well! The message I'm getting is practice and familiarity with your set up is everything, and don't be afraid to change key bindings, whatever works. Also Hotas may, or may not be needed, it seems it depends a bit on who you are and if you have a suitable desk or not!

I found this video pretty soon after starting and it made a huge difference. I changed it around a bit though, but it's basically right.

If you've got a tenner to spare, get yourself a secondhand joystick or gamepad from Cash Converters* and see if it floats your boat. Even if you stick to M/KB, you've got options when new mechanics are added, like SRV driving or the vanity cams. FWIW, I use HotasX for flight, mouse for the galaxy map and right now a joypad for the vanity cams and multicrew gunner. You can mix and match whatever combination you want and this game will support it. Sandro and the gang have done an outstanding job there.

Anway, the point is? ED's Basic keyboard layout is just useless. :)

Edit; One more thing; If you have an on to fly modifiable sensitivity mouse it's a good idea to lover sensitivity, when you snipe targets, so you can be more precise.

With joystick while controlling attitude - FAoff - you get pilot induced oscillations due to sensitivity problems and training here is " less is more " also it is extremely difficult on a highly maneuverable ship eagle,fas...etc to turn with the maximum rate and stop spot on on the trg piper.

There are other factors-differences also on hotas thrust and analog axis.....
