Newcomer / Intro Combat Zones - Should I cut my losses

Hi,

I've never been a big combat player, mainly because it's expensive to learn, especially back when I originally played and it took a long time to grind up to having a single multi-purpose Cobra III or DBX, it would take hours of gameplay just to earn enough to afford to die once... Thats how the game used to be at least for those who have only arrived in the last few years; but since returning to the game recently and finding the grind is less severe I've been able to quickly earn enough to have specialised ships of a decent standard and try my hand at combat again. That's just background to my question, I've been around for a while, though with a long hiatus and never really done much combat, I'm only ranked Novice.

I have a Vulture now, I wanted to do some bounty-hunting but the power-draw on the KWS is insane so figured that was more something I could do once I'd unlocked some more engineers and decided to try combat zones, especially after picking up a mission where I could earn 15M by killing 70 enemies in the zones. Maybe it was the credit signs in my eyes but 'back in my day' that was a serious amount of money, I played the game from launch for three years and never managed to earn that much so I thought maybe this was a bridge too far but nothing to lose (you used to be fined for failing almost any mission which was another thing limiting your ability to try new stuff but that seems to have been removed in most cases now).

The first combat zone I tried was a medium intensity and things went much better that expected, I got 5 kills toward my mission target while never being in any real danger; so I stepped things up and went to a high intensity CZ. There I made 10 kills and while I did take a little bit of hull damage I was still able to head back to base to repair and resupply quite happy that I was progressing towards that target pretty smoothly, and with over 2M credits earned in combat bonds too it seemed like today was going to be a profitable day.

However since then I have been to three further combat zones and made no further kills, on each occassion I've picked my first target, engaged it and lost. The first two were high intensity but then after deciding to step down to a low intensity one I still died without making any kills while the three rebuys have wiped out the profit I'd made on the combat bonds I got earlier.

So, a simple question at the end of all that explanation, did I just get lucky with my first two forays into combat zones? I feel like I should cut my losses, abandon the mission and go do something else until I'm able to engineer my combat ship a bit better. Seems like the level of challenge you get when you enter a combat zone is highly variable and while you could have an easy time and things go very well you're more likely to have a bad time.

CZs can be quite variable however nowadays there are other things to watch out for besides ship type and pilot rank.
For example there are Captains and Journalists from the enemy to be taken out or your side to be defended and their ships are usually much more damage resistant.
There are also Spec Ops wings of 4 with the wing ranked Alpha to Delta they used* to mob sometimes you if they arrived near you and definitely did if you attacked the Alpha first going for them in reverse order could get you one on one fights. Spec Ops ships tend to have the most engineering and exotic weaponry of any of the NPCs but a lot will have some depending on rank.

Things should be easier in the Low CZs where you should see fewer of the special ships, I don’t like the Vulture and am not sure it is a great ship for CZs now it’s guns are powerful but there are only two of them. The KWS is a power hog the C will get you to 3km at a quarter of the power drain of the A and then engineered for speed at no increase in power draw.

*There is a bug where NPCs in a wing don’t attack on mass but only join in when you get a kill which might apply here.

Or you can get suits and weapons and hit the dirt fighting for a good cause. No rebuys, and when critically injured immediately return via drop ship.

G3 gear is readily available.

This is one of the horrible issues with this game. Ship CZs are one of the most difficult places to do ship combat; it is no place for someone who is a novice at combat. The ships there are all specced solely for combat with hull reinforcement and armor plating. But the number of people that seem to end up in them when they're not ready is incredible.

You should go do RES for combat. You can also get similar paying missions for RES hunting which are much easier to achieve. When you have more engineering and experience give CZs another try. But don't do it for CR; it's a terrible option for CRs for combat.

I'll add that there are some places you can stack kill pirate missions and reap multiple rewards for each kill (normally done in a res zone).

I'd leave combat zones until you have some engineering on your ships (at least that was my conclusion a few years ago).

In addition: the Vulture is a good ship - but thoroughly underequipped in the power plant department. I won't say that you can't use a KWS on a Vulture, but with the power issue and only four utility slots available, that would be a very fiddly build. You might post your build here (import it to coriolis or edsy) for some tipps - and if you haven't done so already, you really should unlock the engineers, a few Guardian goodies and possibly powerplay weapons.

Everything has been said already.

To summarise ship CZs in two words, however, it has to be

Bullet sponges

If you're after the credits, a ship CZ is normally a slog, where it takes ages to destroy even the smallest ships, because they are all engineered, especially when you're not an experienced fighter.

On the other hand, if you want to try manoeuvres, check how life is in a scenario with multiple enemies that are not always chasing you (or they are ALL chasing you and you want to learn how to evade), and see the interactions in a big rumble, then they're lots of fun.

But it's not for the money.

I'm Mostly Harmless (I think) and I've only been successful in low intensity conflict zones when I've attacked targets that have other attackers already.
I suggest to do bounty hunting instead. Get 1-2 tonnes of cargo and go to RES sites or simply jump around star systems until a pirate shows up and demands your cargo (you should submit to interdiction once it's started). If you report crimes against you automatically all you have to do is stay alive until system authority vessels show up then do some damage to the pirate while the police blow it up.

The downside to carrying cargo is that it can get a bit relentless in a RES with every new pirate that you haven’t destroyed attacking you so it is best to carry something cheap and be set up to dump it when you want a break.

yeah, that's a different topic but it can be a bit silly sometimes the risk pirates are willing to take to get their hands on like, one ton of clothing or something. Trying to interdict me when the potential payout won't even cover the damage done to your ship when I evade the interdiction.
