Combat Zones - whats the point

So jumped into a combat zone as I had never done this before. Joined in the fight, destroyed 5 or6 ships before I stared to loose shields, jumped out before I was destroyed. What's the point of these zones apart from maybe homing your combat skills. Am I missing something? I did notice I had a wanted status after though.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, don't play much so don't keep up with the new features and strategies.

I know, man, really. What's the point? Why are we here and where are we going?

Seriously, though, you have to go to your functions tab and pick a faction before you start shooting.

-Increase your combat rank faster
-Decent place to test a new fit / ship solo (survivability and sustained dps)
-Build reputation with a faction / destabilize another faction

After you've picked a faction every kill will get you a combat bond. Take that to a station in the system and you can cash it in from the contacts menu
