I'm on the last 1k ly stretch from the bubble after a long pilgrimage to the core. I've been thinking I'll give Exploration a break until the black calls me again. I want to give combat a shot as its something I haven't tried yet and I can't decide on a ship to use. I'm torn between Viper MK3, Cobra MK3, and a Vulture. I don't need opinions on loadouts, I'll play around with that myself. But what ship should I try out first?

Try the Viper, so cheap you can not worry at all about losing it. Or Vulture, it has bigger teeth.

My recommendation would be to find a nice big station (Orbis or Coriolis - just not a platform, basically) that's very close to a HiRES site. Then, buy a Viper MkIII and learn how it flies (especially with FA off). The big station is there for you to easily return to for repairs/resupply/rebuys and turning in bounties.
Once you're happy in a HiRES, move on to a HazRES, and then to CZs, and then maybe look at flying something with bigger teeth.

If you want something cheap, I'd also recommend the Diamondback Scout.

Otherwise, the Vulture is good, but it can be quite fragile at times. Especially the canopy. So take good life support!
If you plan to do missions as well, the DBS, or Cobra make excellent mission runners (Cobra is better).
