I'm not sure I've ever started one of those "I wish Elite Dangerous had..." threads before, but I am champing at the bit to write some code - and I'm curious how interested you fine people would be if certain things were available.
The first struck me when I was considering a different commander name this morning - how do I know if the name already exists? A way to look that up would be pretty handy for a number of reasons.
If I could make a web page that did that, why not take it further and pull all commander stats (assuming a private flag isn't set). How nifty would that be - to see all the relevant info, current ship, stored ships, total assets, progress and so on? Of course, one could share this link in a signature or for joining other online groups, or just general bragging.
One should be able to share current location in order to meet up, or at least a "Last docked at..."...
Don't even get me started on how much fun could be had with galaxy map data.
This is almost a "Fiction of Elite and Community Creations" thread, but although I'm waffling on about what one might achieve with a public API, it's the potential presence of an API as part of the game that I'm really asking about - is that something that is as exciting to you as it is to me?
