Commander Name Capitalisation

I'm someone who tends to clear and restart quite often. I'm trying to overcome this and I'm much better than I was, but it's a thing for me.

Currently, the name of your commander can only be entered and will only be stored in full caps: MYRIAD VANE. To get the capitalisation corrected to normal case - Myriad Vane - it's necessary to submit a request to support, who can make the amendment. But they can only do this once. If you subsequently restart and create a new character under a different name, the amendment cannot be done for the new name.

I can understand this: they'd have little time to do anything else.

Which is why I wonder whether it might be possible to introduce a means for us to make these changes ourselves? Ideally, we would be able to enter our commanders' names in the case we want and see them in that case as we're entering them.

I seem to recall at one point the name entry screen displayed in full caps but, with careful typing, you would still be entering the name in normal case, and it would show up in subsequent text entries and API-based third party tools in normal case, but this no longer appears to be the case (ahem).

But for those of us with existing characters, would there be any means of allowing us to make this change? I'm not asking to change the actual name - just the capitalisation. Something similar to what's permitted on Instagram or Twitch.

Sounds a bit like support shouldn't be doing this. Looks like somebody deliberately designed it in a way that only allow full caps.

If the reason for this no longer exists, or Frontier changed their mind, then yeah - everyone should be able to use lower case when entering their CMDR name.

This was introduced as a "Heath Robinson" fix for some bug years ago - I whinged and complained but was told they had to keep it as they couldn't find another way to cure whatever the bug was. At the time, my main complaint was that ship names were all enforced as UPPER CASE - however with Odyssey, this effect for ship names was removed. So if the ship names can now be in Title Case (or lower case), then why can't Commander names?

...curiously, when transferring the accounts from console... it worked well so, the other account I have is having only 1st letter upper case.

Similar to naming your ship or fleet carrier. When you type it it appears all Caps, but if typed carefully you can put in small letters which show up in your ship name in INARA.

It is interesting to note that if you make a correction to the Caps in your ship name it won't take effect. You must change your ship name to something with a different spelling, then change it again back to your desired ship name with the desired capital letters.

There are numerous examples of sloppy or frustrating text entry fields in this game.

It reminds me when programmers cobble bits of code together without paying attention to the details. It works 'good enough' and they move on.
