Commander naming issue

I decided to get my third commander started last week. No matter what I try, the commander's name always ends up in all caps. I understand it's supposed to be that way in-game. My issue is the name is all-caps in my journal files. My other two commanders have the correct capitalization in their journal files (Name, not NAME). One was re-named for me by support, the other was re-named during the console copy process.

Has anyone successfully created a commander name that wasn't all caps in their journal files? Support hasn't specifically stated "that's how it works", so I thought I'd ask the community. If it looks like that is just how it works, I'll have the name changed after creation.

I think you just need to type it in the correct case and it will be correct. The game shows capitals, but preserves case internally. Same thing with ship names. I certainly didn't have to request lower-case for all mine and they are ok in the journals.

Ofc if you already typed in the commando name it might be de-duping against your already reserved ALLCAPS name - in which case you may be stuffed - I'd try typing a different name in lower case just to confirm it.

gl!

I tried all that. I even tried typing it in notepad, then copying and pasting into the game. I must have cleared my save and the associated journal file a half-dozen times. Every name I tried was all caps in my journal.

At least I know the journal should show the same capitalization that I use. This is my only Steam install, so I might try completely un-linking it. A fresh start might resolve the issue.

We did have a bug some time back that no matter what you typed in, the game converted it to upper-case (they did this deliberately to overcome some other issue one of their updates caused).

This was corrected some updates ago but to check this out I went into the game, bought a ship and named it in Title Case - and it is stored in the journal correctly. So the issue you are experiencing is not a recurrence of that bug but something else.

Good luck getting it sorted, remember a support ticket might be your only hope Obi-Wan ...

P.S. All my commanders are in title case, never needed to have that corrected by support.

I can confirm this. No matter what I tried with the name of my second commander (copypasta, caaarefully typing, totally different names), the name is always in caps in the journals and hence, in EDDiscovery, EDMC etc. as well. This was a few weeks ago and with a Frontier account without any ties to Steam or Epic.

When I started my first commander (you guessedi it: "Lhorndra") a few years ago, the game didn't turn the name into all caps. As mentioned here, the game just shows the name in capitals, but doesn't convert the name itself.

So something must have changed in the meantime. :(

I just checked the first journal file for my primary commander, dated 2020/12/05. The name was spelled "Fixitman" upon creation back then. This is either a bug, or an undocumented change. I have already contacted support, and they seem to be misunderstanding the issue. I'll try re-phrasing it, and I'll add the old and new journals to illustrate. Maybe I'm not explaining it properly.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

I cant do lower case as there is another strontium dog out there somewhere methinks (flew past him in sin dez many moons ago 2014)

I finally constructed a reply to support that they understood. I'm not implying anything negative about them. Miscommunications happen all the time, no big deal :)

Their reply made it clear that all commanders created in Odyssey only were all-caps on creation. All commanders created after the Legacy/Live split will be all caps going forward. Game version doesn't make a difference after that point.

With this in mind, I'm going to create the commander, and play the game. No point worrying about this any further. Once again, support did a great job. It just took a little while, which was probably my fault.

Well that sounds like a load of testicles - I have a Steam account that I used to restart recently (16th May) to check that new commanders do not start in the pilot's area (noob zone) and that is very definitely in Title Case. So I am calling-out the support answer as testicles. I suspect they introduced a bug and are just sweeping it under the carpet. There is no excuse for commander names being all upper-case when you can name your ships in whatever case you want.

I included a link to this thread in my last support reply. I'll send another reply asking them to check this thread again. That commander was definitely created after the split.
