In-game comms are coming 'soon' and some forumites may not have a suitable headset yet.
Amazon have on temporary offer the Plantronics Gamecom 380 headset for just £12.95 delivered:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0079G2Y2A
It uses standard audio jacks - one for mic and one for the headphones. No USB shenanigans.
I have a set of these, and bought a set for the lad a while back to replace some stupidly expensive Turtle Beach PX22s - which were terrible quality internally. He hasn't broken them yet or moaned about them, so they pass the teenager test. He says the mic is better than the previous Turtle Beach ones.
The Plantronics headset pretty comfortable (big earcups completely surround your ears), the (bendable) microphone is noise-cancelling and has *excellent* clarity. The mic can swing up out of the way, there's a mute switch and volume control on the left earcup.
The velvet-like ear cushions can be pulled off, so it's possible to wash them if necessary I guess.
The audio quality on the headphones is more than acceptable as long as you are not expecting £200 performance. Build quality is actually quite nice.
Summary: If you don't want to spend stupid money, and couldn't give a monkey's about the lack of street-cred branding, they're very good value for money if you haven't got a headset yet, and pretty handy as a back-up.
Amazon will of course be putting the price up soon.
Hope this is of use to someone!
