Comms - Voice Quality.....

I love the sound of the in game voice comms, it's very atmospheric but I find it difficult to understand what people are saying a lot of the time. I usually fly with one other player and we use skype simply because the quality is better although it does just sound like my mate rather than CMDR BADASS.

Anyhow, last night we got talking to another couple of pilots by accident using the elite voice comms. I think one of them called me by mistake and we ended up in a 4 player conference call. So the ingame system is vastly superior simply because you can just talk to any ship you see without having to worry about skype or teamspeak, etc....

But, please FD...do something to improve the sound quality.....With 4 players in the call it was very hard to understand a lot of what was said. Lots of audio dropouts on top of the usual atmospheric static and beeps. With wings coming it's going to be essential...if voice comms is quick easy and clear we'll easily be able to form wings with strangers...or threaten them.
 
Me personally I think the audio effects are just fine, I wouldn't want to change them.

Something that does bother me though is the drop-outs that you describe and I have been wondering whether they are actually part of the effect or whether they are actual network issues.

If they are part of the effect, I would suggest to remove them completely because there is nothing more annoying than missing bits of a sentence.

If they are part of a network issue then I wonder how much can be done, considering that this game is peer to peer right?
 
I haven't used the voice comms since Beta because the friend I was playing with called them "worse than useless" and couldn't understand a word I was saying. I loved them, the effect couldn't be more perfect to my mind, and I understood him fine.

It's possible they may have changed since I used them, but I wonder if the intentional atmospheric signal distortion might be worsening a basically low-quality signal for some players. I hope they can make the effect a client-side toggle in future.
 
Do comms work now then - apart from the (possibiy working as designed) sound quality?

i haven't tried using them for a while. Come to think of it, I haven't encountered any orher players for quite a while anyway.
 
That's the thing I love the effects too but on top of an already poor quality line it's a bit too much. Clarity has to be paramount, being able to hail other ships at will really makes the game for me. If people aren't using it because it's no good then it needs fixing.

Yes comms has worked for a while now, certainly since the december launch anyway.
 
I've not heard the audio comms yet, any pilots I've met have either not had a mic (so we've used text comms) or just don't answer the ring-ring. I'm in the Mobius group fwiw.
 
I agree that the effects are great but it needs just a touch more clarity (minor adjustment not a re-write). I've had most problems with drop outs and pauses which break up the flow of conversation. I imagine these are due to jitter issues between peers rather than by design.
 
Voice comms were perfectly fine last time I checked (and beautifully atmospheric) maybe your colleagues need to check their mic settings?
