Communicating with other CMDR's - ?

This is probably going to be one of those Doh! moments as I seem to be missing something and hopefully someone will be able to enlighten me on how to use communications effectively.

1) If I get a direct message from a commander, be that docked or during flight, I can see it's from CMDR - <Insert Name Here>, in the comm panel; but if I want to reply directly and haven't scanned them yet, all I'm offered in the 'Local' list is their Portrait and ship type to choose from. And I'd much rather select a name than a Portrait as the pictures leave a lot to be desired.

2) Also if I'm in a wing, all comms seem to be directed at my wing mates - how to I switch to communicating with a non wingmate ?

P.S. I'm on XBox posting here as the mechanics should be the same for all of us.

If you can select the Cmdr as a target, regardless of whether you have scanned them, on PC you just press "Enter" and you are talking to them only. Not sure how that works on Xbone, but should be similar. You don't need to have scanned them. This of course falls down a bit if there are multiple Cmdrs in the instance, none of which you have scanned :(

if someone talks to you you do need do nothing indeed

switch to chat and use the TAB-key (on PC - check which on the XB) to switch
same when in wing - TAB switches to local or other targets

type '/r' before the message to immediately target whomever last messaged you. '/l' for local, '/w' for wing. So if someone compliments you on the size of your Cutter at a busy station, you can send '/r thanks cmdr!' without scrolling through a list. :)

I just bought a wireless keyboard for typing messages and system names in elite for my Xbox.

Unfortunately we can not use binding for more control of our ships, but we can use the tab key to easily switch between local/wing or direct messages.

Or ye could just buy a chatpad fer 30 quid and plug it into the controller...then plug the turtle beach into the chatpad...problem solved unless ye have fat fingers.

Problems arise however if ye wanna use a mic...if I wanna use the mic, I cant use a chatpad and vice versa. That being said, I dont chat to many players because I never see any so its not a thing I consider a big priority ^

The chat pad has a microphone/headset jack in it. You cannot use the standard XBOX headset you need one with a small 8mm standard headphone plug. My chatpad came with a headset.

To all who responded thank you....it's led me to do a www search with term 'elite dangerous chat commands' and I got this ....

Communications

To view or send ship-to-ship text messages the Comms Panel first needs to be selected (use focus mode or press the Comms hotkey - 'C' by default). You can use standard interface controls to navigate the Comms Panel, cycling through five tabs:

Chat log

This tab is marked with a speech bubble icon. Here you can view incoming text comms and send text comms.

  • Untargeted (local) comms will be broadcast to *all* nearby ships.
  • Use [TAB] to cycle through valid message recipients.
Commands

To submit a command, type it and submit it (press [Enter]).

  • /help brings up a list of all commands.
  • /clear to clear the chat log.
  • /d (or /direct, or /to) then a player's Commander name then your message to send a direct message.

To select an outgoing message channel, type it and press space. If that channel is valid in your current context, the command will disappear from your chat bar immediately. If not, it will remain and give you an error message when you submit it.

  • /r (or /reply) to respond to the last ship that you received comms from.
  • /t (or /target) to send comms directly to targeted ship.
  • /w (or /wing) to send comms to all members of your wing.
  • /v (or /voice) to send comms to players you are in voice comms with.
  • /l (or /local) to send comms to all ships within range.
Colours

Comms text is colour coded:

  • Orange: local broadcast.
  • Cyan: wing broadcast.
  • Yellow: direct message.
  • Red: authority broadcast.

No good to you, sorry, but on PC the TAB key cycles through direct/local/wing and what not comms.

We should defo have something for the instance you are in. Especially around stations all cmdrs within the 7.5k range. Would help in busy stations.
Of course you should have option to not listen etc.

This is good info. I was chatting with somebody in a station yesterday and after I clicked away I couldn't figure out how to send another reply. His ship disappeared from the list but he was still in the instance. You should be able to just click their face to text. All you can do with that is block/report/add friend.
