Communications questions

I need a little help on communications, and I haven't been able to find the answer anywhere on the site so far.

My main problem is that when I receive a direct communication from a real CMDR, there doesn't seem to be a way to automatically reply to that one CMDR if I haven't already scanned and ID'ed them. Does anybody know if there is a way to directly reply without spinning my ship around and trying to locate the CMDR that communicated directly with me?

Multiple times I have had CMDRs communicate with me, but I have just been about to enter a USS, or station orbit, or RES, etc., so have entered the zone without responding right away. Once I have entered the zone, there is now no longer any way to locate the CMDR and directly respond the direct communication.

Am I missing something? I feel like I am often being rude when I don't intend to be.

Open comm panel and select second tab and than commanders name to open chat with him.
Hard to do if he's already opened fire :)

Yes, I do this, but while I have received a direct communication from CMDR "X", my communication options seem to be "Anaconda", "Sidewinder", etc.

Maybe this is because I have often dropped into a zone (USS, station, etc.) and my "local" communications options have reset, though. I'll check again (next time someone communicates with me).

When you receive a direct communication from a commander, try opening the comms panel and typing /r. That should reply to the last sender. I think this works only if the cmdr is still in the same zone or instance though. I don't think it will work if you enter a new uss, res, etc...

Here is some more info from the 1.2 update.

· Untargeted (local) comms will be broadcast to *all* nearby ships
· Use [TAB] to cycle through valid message recipients
· Use [/r] to respond to the last ship that you received comms from
· Use [/t] to send comms directly to targeted ship
· Use [/w] to send comms to all wingmen
Comms text is colour coded:
· Orange: local broadcast
· Cyan: wing broadcast
· Yellow: Direct transmission
· Red: authority broadcast
