Communications with VR glasses

Hello,

I received an anomaly from fellow Elite player asking voice communication over the text panel on the top left.
I have a headset with microphone, but never used it with Elite.
Quick check on the controls showed that there was a mute button for microphone, but I didn't find how to activate the connection.

Couple of questions:
How to communicate with other players using the game text window? It appears to have "menu" buttons on top, but I could not figure out how to access them with Oculus and Saitek X-52 on.
Using keyboard is difficult with oculus on, I have seen other programs converting voice to text, but it appears complicated.

How to communicate with other players using microphone? Does everyone use TeamSpeak, and if so, how do you know which channel and how to keep track of instances and players in same area?

I searched but did not find good thread how people communicate, maybe they do it with lasers, sending morsecode to the receivers hull?

voice attack does it for me
"open coms"
"close coms"
and other commands...

i have never used it with anyone though

but eventually ill setup some better keybinds/voice commands to enable voice chat with the dk2 setup.

but essentially it wuoldnt be any different than the standard keyboard map just done via voice attack

I use a combination of Voice Attack and Dragon Naturally Speaking v12 Home Edition.

Voice Attack: "Open Comms" = presses 2
You then have to navigate to the 'open text chat' with a player, or if they've texted you first it should open straight to the chat line.
I have then configured DNS to use the spacebar on my keyboard as the hot-key to activate 'voice to text'.
Then I speak what I want to say to the other CMDR.
Then Voice Attack: "Send Message" = press enter

DNS v12 Home Edition is $16 on ebay and works great for me, but I've heard it doesn't work very well for others with accents (I have an American English accent and I speak slowly)

Good Luck!

PS: I don't use the ingame chat yet, not until they change it to push to talk instead of push to mute, so for now me and my wing use Teamspeak (have my own server)

Thank you,
I may be a level below voice commands here, I couldn't answer to the call since I didn't know to press "2" to open communications.
I will look into mapping it somewhere convenient.

VoiceAttack was the best $8 I have ever spent.

You should really consider picking it up.... I think its still got a free trial period of 30 days too.

The way it works is very straightforward. At its most basic function it maps Voice commands to Key strokes. You can get more complicated with it later, but at its root that's all it does.

If you program it thoroughly enough you can make it react to almost anything you'd mumble.

Good Luck!
