Community created bookmark file

In 2.1 one of the new features to be added is 'Bookmarks'. Now I have no idea how FD will implement this in code but there is a possiblity that the data might be recorded locally on your computer. It could turn out that bookmark files could be edited outside of ED. If all of these conditions are met then we may be able to swap bookmark data.

If it transpires that bookmark data can be passed about then why not get players to submit quality bookmarks to a site to be collated as to create a super set bookmark file.

End game result: Download this replacement bookmark file and install it. Next time you fire up ED & Galaxy map you see bookmarks are everywhere, and each one adds handcrafted data in game.

To be honest this seems like it could work but since all system names are searchable I'd rather have a list of systems with a reason for bookmarking and copy/paste the sys names in I care about to add them manually.

If the data is being stored locally in an accessible manner, I won't be surprised to see players posting instructions on the forum on how to share the file with others and how to merge information from different files into your own. Players have actually managed to change HUD colors by changing local files.

I don't think it will be possible to review data though, not unless importing it into your own game and painstakingly check the bookmarks in game. This is why players will most likely just use data from friends. Personally I wouldn't bother importing data from a site, with the risk of having some icons somewhere arranged in the shape of a giant... imperial cutter.

Do you think FD should add an import / export bookmarks option in the settings menu? As akin to browser bookmark options.

I think this would work better if the data was stored on FD's servers. There could be a list then of 'most popular bookmarks' which players could use, and the creator would have the option of making the data public or private, with editing permissions only for the creator.

You could take this to the next level and have bookmarks which are shared but private to player groups.

Maybe add bookmark folders or groups, some folders/groups could contain secret faction data like military targets, or trade embargos & therefore need some form of security.
