Newcomer / Intro Community Goals, Interstellar Initiatives, Powerplay, and other long-game activities

I've done some exploring, some trading, some bounty hunting, and though I have a lot to learn, I know that I'm going to want to get involved with the larger, more comprehensive activities.

Of course, I have some questions.

1. It would appear that Community Goals are inactive, at least for the moment. Am I correct?

2. The Interstellar Initiatives seem really interesting, but I don't know whether any are active, or how to get involved with one if they are. Is there an Interstellar Initiative currently active? If so, how do I sign up and start helping?

3. I have a hunch that Powerplay has dethroned Community Goals and Interstellar Initiatives and is now the primary way for players to take part in important activities in the galaxy. Am I correct?

3. not really no. But Powerplay is a thing you can get into to be a part of things at a stellar level

If you're interested in the Thargoid story, the player group AXI (Anti Xeno Initiative) is running a community goal at the moment called "The Art of War". Fighting Thargoids is hard and I gather you're just starting out in the game but AXI also has less dangerous objectives like supplying meta-alloys, Thargoid sensors, probes, etc. At least you can learn a lot from the AXI players.
