Community Goals - Known bug

I don't quite understand what the issue is here..? Last time I looked I was in the top 40% of the exploring CG thing, but I am on holiday and can't get into the game before next Saturday, so I guess I'll find out... but I hope that it doesn't mean that all those hours I spent doing exboring is for nothing... hey ho, good job its only a game.

It just means instead of going to the station and collecting your reward there was a bug that automatically sent you the credits. You'll still get your credits, you just don't have to go get them.

Oh, thanks! I'd call it a feature and move on ;p

They have stated (I forget where) that it's only supposed to do this (automatically complete and cash in your CG) if you haven't done so yourself after a period of 8 weeks. This is to fix an exploit where you could hang on to completed CGs until everyone else had cashed theirs in, thereby becoming the number one contributor.

Are you sure this is how it works? Why not just freeze commander's category on the end of CG? I hope you're just misunderstanging something, otherwise it would mean FDev surely doesn't seek easy ways... or, actually, I'm starting to see a pattern: they seem to be deliberately avoiding solutions that make any sense.

I know that exploit existed because I have a "friend" who (inadvertantly mind you) stumbled upon it when he got back from a 3 week trip to Sag A and found that his reward for a CG, which hadn't completed when he set off, payed higher than expected when he cashed it in.

I agree - their workaround/solution for this bug (auto cashing in CGs after 8 weeks) compared to a decent fix like freezing each players ranking/reward at the point the CG ends is quite extraordinary and indicative of some downright sloppy programming that I personally would feel pretty ashamed of.

That said, "my friend" appreciates that these diligent and hard-working devs have a lot on their plate and would in no way wish to antagonize them into carrying out a more thorough investigation of the bug that could result in earlier excess payouts being reclaimed.

:D

This doesn't mean that happened because other people claimed their rewards first.
This is a known bug which happened with the 1.3 undate, all completed and uncashed CGs from before 1.3 began offering "sole best commander" to everyone. It must be the database with the info on who has what category was corrupted, so everyone ended with the highest one.
I witnessed this bug too, as I've mentioned in this thread earlier. I had two such CGs. which with the 1.3 patch began offering me about 20 millions each. I didn't take the money, waiting for FD to fix it, but now one of them cashed in automatically, tje other one didn't and shoes the minimal "best 100%" reward now.
UPD Acutally, I've just cheched, it autocashed too, with the minimal reward.

My own theory as to what happened post 1.3 (which hit during my "friends" Sag A trip) was that they only kept CG data around for a certain period of time (e.g. they cleared out some old CG data with the 1.3 update which meant that people who still hadn't cashed those in were suddenly seen as the sole contributor). That fit the evidence and seemed far more likely than the idea that, as people turned in their completed CGs they were removed from the standings such that the last people to cash in would always be the top (that's clearly nonsense and would have been spotted immediately). Pretty much as soon as Lembava auto-completed for me I thought "uh huh, I know why they've done that".

I honestly can't see any other reason why they would ditch the old mechanism of having a Completed goal in your transactions tab which you then had to return to the originating station to claim your reward. It's elegant, it's consistent with bounty claims and certain mission types, it allows you to see the final results and gives a sense of closure and it fits with the RP side of things (this station has asked you to do stuff for them and wants you to turn up in person at the end to accept a firm congratulatory handshake).

@Zac
Just to let you know that it doesn't appear that the Antal CG has applied discounted prices on Tech goods.
The global reward is 6% discount for 7 days but these items are still showing at the same prices as before the CG completed, e.g. Land Enrichment Systems still sells @ 4312cr.
(prices match a screenshot that I took 2nd July, during the CG)

But that's what I'm saying. It was your statement that there was an "exploit where you could hang on to completed CGs until everyone else had cashed theirs in, thereby becoming the number one contributor".

But they didn't. You still have to return to the station if you don't want to wait 8 weeks for automatic cash-out. The fact that it happens before 8 weeks is a bug, which statement is the purpose of this thread in the first place.

Sorry, I was paraphrasing something I read elsewhere - my own belief was more like that there was an exploit "where you could hang on to completed CGs until long after the goal had finished and FD had cleared out the old records for that CG".

But they didn't. You still have to return to the station if you don't want to wait 8 weeks for automatic cash-out. The fact that it happens before 8 weeks is a bug, which statement is the purpose of this thread in the first place.

Yes, but even introducing that 8 week limit seems completely unnecessary unless we accept that they do indeed have a problem/exploit with very old completed CGs not having a snapshot of that commanders final "score" but rather relying on ALL the data for that CG still being around when it's finally handed in, in order for it to be able to calculate that persons rank and reward.

I think you and I actually agree to be honest (that it's surprising that such a bug exists and that they appear to be "avoiding solutions that make any sense") so I'm not entirely sure what we're debating here :)
