Community service for repeat Crime & Punishment offenders

I'm sure the idea has been floated before, but just in case ...

How about if repeat Crime and Punishment offenders (maybe those with high "notoriety" who get shipped to a detention center) get permanently locked into a Sidewinder and have to do "community service" - shipping 1000 tons of biowaste back and forth between two stations - before they're allowed back into their ship?

The Sidewinder could even sport a suitable "convict" paintjob, something like the following:

what purpose would this serve?

And there are legitimate gameplay reasons that will actually give you notoriety when only do BGS manipulation, that actually involves a much bigger risk of this actually being used against them, than what the target player groups this is aimed at.

And realistically the target audience I know you are after here, would very rarely be affected by this, since they would avoid to die in any situation where they would risk to encounter this. We already know that they do most of their engineering, farming credits etc in solo/private group, so no risk of players attacking them when they are in their "weak" ships, and when they are hunting for their "easy" kills, they they choose the engagement and if things get to dangerous, this would just be another reason for them to combat log.

But what I do know, is that the intended target group consists of some players with a very good understanding of how this would work, just like how they quickly learned how the C&P system worked, and you do not see any of these players complaining about this, but those players who requested the "tougher" C&P is the players that keeps on complaining about stupid C&P, as now they get sent to detention center for small things...

And I am pretty sure, that those griefers will come up with a "strategy" to send unaware players to detention center with high notoriety by using EXISTING game mechanics around stations to suicide in small inexpensive ships while the target player is speeding = instant notoriety and action from the station, and then all who cheered for this very bad suggestion would now risk facing the consequence of their own suggestion.

So this is a suggestion that would hurt PvE crowd more than griefers.

Honestly, I think it was from a joke in HighwayWarrior's stream chat. I don't remember the context.

The sad thing is that there are players that do believe that suggestions like this would actually be good, not understanding how this would affect them, just like many cheered for the tougher C&P and then learned that they too would get sent to detention center, my friends can attest to my mood the first time I was sent there. Now I understand the system and why it is still broken, and I have adapted, so now it is mostly 4 extra jumps back home if that happens...

It kinda was and it kinda wasn't but I'll admit to not having fully thought through the implications so I appreciate the input from Misty_Dark pointing out the flaws.

OP, how would this work in a galaxy of independent star systems? Even Federal and Imperial systems are still largely independent, with open space being more akin to international waters than one's hometown.

The other issue is that mass murders tend not to get community service, but rather lifetime sentences in a supermax prison. The real question is, why don't Detention Centers actually "detain" anyone? Make criminals stare at their lovely holome behind bars for an hour before being released. :p

The "community service" would be enforced by the detention center (I don't really see an issue with that).

Being detained for a period of time would basically be a game breaker - people would just rage quit. Whereas community service is a chore (but nevertheless a form of gameplay) which can be performed with good grace by anyone with an ounce more humour about it than some appear to have.
;)

Hmmmm..... Well, if the detention center 'detained' your main ship until you did your community service in that loaner Sidewinder, I could see this working.

If "people" are griefers, then I don't see a problem here :p
