Compensating for ship inertia?

Would gimbals be acceptable rather than turrets? The biggest problem I've been having so far against more maneuverable ships is I can't keep them perfectly in front of me long enough to line up a shot with fixed weapons.

Yes. Fixed weapons can be difficult (especially for newer pilots). It also depends on the type of weapon- a hitscan weapon (laser beam) is a lot easier to use fixed than a projectile weapon (like a canon) because you have to account for velocity and/or spool up time.

Gimbals are what I would consider the baseline. Fixed weapons get a damage bonus, and turrets get a damage reduction.

Thrusters cause the ship to fly backwards. Depending on the ship, I fly backwards with throttle in the blue, and pitch/thruster as well. Even a tank like the 'Conda turns well like this.

Once you learn this technique, highly maneuverable ships become very easy to fly.
