Competent Imperial Cutter Pilot?

The Cutter requires quite some Imperial Rank, right? Can somebody get there and have just the "Competent" Combat rank? Yea, one gets rep also for doing other stuff, but still ...

I don't engage in PVP but seeing that Ship I felt soooooo temptet to get a FSD Interdictor and see what the Competent Cutter Pilot CMDR is made of ... ;)

Combat rank and navy ranks are independent.

Depending on the missions you choose for rank grinding - for instance hauling, couriers, passengers instead of combat, assassination etc - you can easily progress in the navy ranks and even stay below competent combat rank.

So... yes!

I see two possibilities. One is you'll find a dedicated trader build that will try and jump away as soon as they can. They'll either succeed or you'll turn them to scrap in short order. The other is someone who's deleted their save and is working though money making metas and rank grind. Potentially you could have a Cutter PvP expert hiding in there. I'm guessing the former is more likely though.

Seen also a novice Corvette these days in Eravate.....this didn't looked right.
Than i remembered, that my combat rank was "harmless" because i was there with my second account (main is on DW2) flying around in a Python......

If you make a twink and know what you need to do, than the combat rank is only an indicator which engineers you have already access to, but still not fully engineered this cutter pilot could possibly be very well experienced.
.....or maybe it was a noob who watched too many how-to's on youtube ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pretty sure I was still mostly harmless when I got my cutter. I have always enjoyed exploration and even trade over combat I only fight when I can't run. Of course now I got the cutter my combat rank is climbing decently quickly as I can now comfortably survive battles.

Every Clipper Pilot in every combat scenario, runs the risk of loosing the fight, but they will NOT NOTICE DEFEAT :D

I saw a Novice Cutter CMDR earlier today.

Said a friendly "o7 CMDR, How's things?" and they immediately spooled up the FSD and jumped out.

Admittedly, I was flying a PvP spec Chieftain. Not that I can actually do PvP...

I'm a combat novice (literally and rank-wise) and I've been flying a Cutter for a few months - shallow as it may be I wanted one because I consider it the best looking ship in the game.

I've just arrived in Colonia with it, so I'll be grinding up to Expert to unlock Petra Olmanova, but combat is usually a fringe part of the game for me. I'm 11% away from my Exploration Elite, which will be my first one, then my focus will shift to getting Trade Elite (currently 59% Entrepreneur), which the Cutter will make rather easier than in other ships once I jam cargo racks into every available slot.

I have a Cutter

I'm competent at fighting

I'm Elite in Trading and Exploration

Try to interdict me and sell me something at a higher price than the galactic average if you dare! You can be sure I will blind your cockpit with biowaste in a very competent way! ;)

As others said, Cutter is arguably the best trader in game, so why should a pilot of one have combat rank?

Also what is with this obsession of other people's ships and ranks? You can't haz their stuffz anyways.

I beat you all with mostly harmless! Not that it's something worth bragging about but I was and still am MH. And I had Cutter. Luckily used for trading and one failed exploration attempt.

@Bigmaec
I blame ED for displaying jut combat rank as a general pilot skill indicator. It's be nice if we could decide which rank (if any) would be displayed.

It's a massive shame, imo, that you can rank up both militaries without firing a single shot and by only delivering tea to hippies on a distant planet.
I have never ever understood this.
Why isn't there a military faction with military type missions?!!!!!!....just like previous Elite games from the 90's!!!! Those bombing run and spy camera run missions used to be great!

I gather you have never heard the term REMF? ;)

Here is a "competent" cutter who lasted a whole 8 seconds vs my Courier - short range penetrator rails.
He was so talented I decided to nominate him for our prestigious Darwinism Awards. Enjoy o7

P.S. If you want to see more (in)competence here is a mamba
