Competitive ships - great for Elite Dangerous

One of the aspects of Beyond Q1 that I find very exciting is the fact that there is more competition between the top-end ships. This is so good for the game.

For example, the new T-9 specs make it very competitive with the Cutter for bulk cargo hauling when you consider lack of rank progression and cheaper cost. I see raging debates if the Cutter is worth it anymore. Nobody can agree. That’s great! That’s how it should be.

The T-10 is now a viable option for multi-role and combat along with the big 3 with it’s fixed power distributor. I for one will use my T-10 instead of my Conda because I like the ship way better and I don’t feel like I am compromising doing so. It’s a great ship and I appreciate that Frontier listened to the community here as well. Btw, the T-10 is clearly part of the Big 4 now so no more of this Big 3 business, it’s 2018 now guys and gals.

Even the Chieftain is a nice alternative to ships like the FAS. Very comparable.

Making a choice of endgame ship is now less straightforward than before and now you have different choices depending on what is most important to you. This is great for the game. Not every commander is going to use the same ship in every situation.

However, one ship still stands alone and badly needs this kind of competition. The Python. For a medium pad ship it is just heads and shoulders above all the rest by a very wide margin. Even ships in its class that require large pads like the Imperial Clipper just don’t hold a candle to it. The Type-7 would be good for some roles if it could somehow squeeze into a medium pad but it just doesn’t look this this will happen.

So, Frontier, here is hoping that one of the new ships in the later updates can compete with the Python for medium pad multi-role/cargo hauler. It doesn’t have to be a Python clone, but it should be comparable: better at some things, worse at others. Frontier will know if it did a good job if nobody can agree which ship to use vis-a-vis the Python.

For example, if Frontier ever made a souped up Federal Dropship that wasn’t just combat focused but was just a great multi-role ship that could go toe-to-toe with the Python, I think I would never be able to overcome the intense nerd glee. The Krait is a sweet looking ship as well, perhaps that will give the Python a run for its money. But we really should get a souped up FDS Turbo Edition. With the coffee makers.

I look forward to finding out if the Python finally gets dethroned in Beyond!

yep i think more direct competition within the tiers would be good for the game. I was really hoping the Cobra IV would be a direct competitor to the Asp Explorer

I don't have a Cutter, but this whole idea that the T9 is now in the same conversation as the Cutter is pretty much nonsense. The Cutter has speed, shields and guns on top of that cargo capacity. It's the most secure hauler in the game. It's nice that the T9 can carry that stuff, but if the A.I. gets buffed at any point, you're going to be flying a very expensive coffin. The second you have a Cutter outfitted and engineered, there's nothing in your way from point A to point B just enjoy the ride.

With that said, the T9 needed this buff. It's bread and butter is being the biggest baddest lakon trader in the game. I plan on buying and engineering FSD/Shields for hauling when the beta ends.

How about a Type-8? A low profile T7, able to use medium pads, with some stand out features to differentiate it from the combat ships- less armament, but more/better armour, for instance. Maybe slower than a Python, but more agile? Whatever it takes to make a competitive hauler, rather than yet another multi-role or warship. What do you think, AMN- is that similar to what you've got in mind?

You can't really create competition with the Python, it can do anything better than most ships, and almost as good as the best specialized ships that sacrifices a lot to be there anyway.

But at least this ship is not that good in PvP, thank God for that !

Sure that would be great Lakon answer to the Python! Nice one :)

Being in love with the FDS I’d love to see a Core Dynamics Federal Mission Ship (FMS) that has a modified FDS hull along with similar capability as the Python. A Python competitor with coffee makers basically.

Let’s hope we get both!

Great insight - I now may need to step out of my conda for awhile to try out the T10 lol.

I do love the Cheiftan - took out an Anaconda in the Haz over the weekend - very cool.

As a long-term Python owner, is sort of agree and disagree at the same time. The Python isn't too good in my opinion (in fact I think it should have 6 utility hardpoints instead of just 4, it is the in the middle between the AspX and the Anaconda except for this detail), it's really just that there is only one other multi-purpose ship that can compete in that area at all, which is the Clipper, a ship notoriously limited by its hardpoint placement and its size making it off-limits for outposts.

So I do actually wish to see more ships like the Python: versatile, multi-role ships of similar size and with outpost access. It is possible that the Krait might fill such a role, the Chieftain clearly cannot. I still also wish for a medium multi-purpose by Gutamaya, something in between the Python and AspX, essentially.

However, we, or more precisely Frontier, need to be careful not to simply replace the Python with a new ship that simply surpasses it, as that would put us right back to square 1, that is one definite uncontested ship choice if you want to be versatile and still access outposts.

Rick Sanchez, my secondary commander never flies anything other than small ships. The Cobra Mk IV is THE go to small, General Purpose ship.

FDEV just needs to add small pad only content to the game, like medium pads, small pads would encourage the use of small ships.

Like rares stations that don’t have medium pads, or UA bombing where medium and larger pads are disabled.

Anything. I just hope there is some small ship only content.

*Rick May fly a keelback in the future, but only as an SLF wrapper.

Thats why they need to shorten the damn wings on the Clipper so it fits on a medium pad!
It would create a really nice balance of the big medium ships for players to chose from depending on how they like to play.

Python - more cargo / guns
Clipper - more speed, agility / jump range

Or create another ship that'd be an interesting 'big-medium' to provide an alternative to the Python in some way.
