Complaints about how much Elite Dangerous \ Horizons costs

Yeah, I can't really wrap my head around people not understanding that they are getting access to all updates that are included in horizon for this price, maybe if it was explained as a season pass on steam people might understand it with minimal reading?

You have to think about it like thus:

- If you're a new player, Horizons has cost you $60, over the course of the year you've spent $5/month to play this game. Cheap, right?

- If you're a 'returning' player, Horizons (with the discount) has cost you $45, over the course of the year you've spent $3.75/month...Even cheaper, right?

Almost every single paid MMO I can think of costs more than this, and E:D gives exactly the same, significant updates and support.

Its because its not a season pass asmuch as its an early access as they say.

If you compare it to other games that work along a similair line.

World of warcraft, new expansion, current previous game is still there with more added BUT its a sub model. (Maybe guild wars would be a better example but their expansion are far less common).

Destiny on the other hand mirrors it perfectly. You have all the previous content, those with the base game have (although far more limited than elite does) are able to play or interact with those with the expansion, theres no monthly fee except the base game etc, it has a ten year plan, yearly one off buy etc.

The difference with those 2 though is they throw everything out at the start, HERES NEW EXPANSION, HERES LOADS OF NEW STUFF...and 3 months later, people have played it all and theres not much else to look forward to for the rest of the year except tweaks, adjustments to whats already there or minor additions etc (dont quote me, just giving examples). Elite doing it in reverse means some are less than blown away by the delivery as its all base and building plans for future stuff. Some are on a break but are waiting for 2.1, some are doing what they were doing pre horizons etc, just now that planet next to their trade station looks a bit better.

The key element is they have something to come back to over the year, every 3 or so months there "SHOULD" be something new to experiance, whether its a limp wings addition or a marmite flavoured powerplay, its atleast a large new addition. I'm willing to give them horizons to see if it'll work and for those who arnt impressed then the best time to buy horizons is next christmas when it'll be a tenner and season 3 is released.

...although it does beg the question, should this be the way to play it now theyre not the only sexy legs on the block this year?

I lucked out by buying Premium Beta, which includes the Lifetime expansion pass. Even without that, I'd see Horizons as costing around 3.33 UKP a month, less than a pint of beer. For the time I've played, that's pretty good value.

Cheers, Phos

Everybody needs to know for himself what his money is worth, you can't really blame anybody who thinks whatever is too expansive. The silly ones are those who think they have some kind of right to get something for a price they decide.

lol... The original Destiny kept me entertained for a month or two, but mainly because I was off work at the time. The release this year didn't hold my attention for long. I'd got two characters to max level within a few days, and then kind of lost interest (no, I haven't finished the story yet... But for some reason I just can't be bothered...). This isn't to say that there is anything wrong with Destiny - it is a good game, and good value for money. Same as E: D. But E: D just gets its hooks into you (well, me anyway), and that's after playing since beta - I have no doubt I'll still be playing it in a few years.

It's basically a season pass. I personally avoid those like the plague. At least Frontier have been relatively detailed in what they are going to give you. Many just ask you preorder their content up front without you having any way to know whether it will be worth it to you.

It isn't really early access, its been marked such because the definitions have been messed up a lot, it is a season pass, meaning you buy it, and then you get access to things that arrive over time.

Where early access really means something is unfinished, and the game isn't unfinished, it is just continually developed.

A season pass is when you buy something with content and then a seperate package of collected DLC is provided at a discount.

Eg when it started with the LA noir and got popular with the cod franchise, you bought the game and then you could buy each DLC pack optionally as they were released or a collected pass with it all together and usually an early time access privilege (like you got to play it a week before those who bought the packs seperately at a higher price).

An early access is exactly that, ark survival evolved for example gave you an island and the basic mechanics of how the game works and they built upon that adding more and more content to the already existing world. You play the game as soon as there is a playable release but there might not be much do to. No part of horizons is optional. You cant purchase the multi-crew but not the planatary landings.

FD managed to confuse the heck out of their customer base by marketting Horizons in such a bizarre fashion; folks just don't know, quickly and easily (those first five seconds where a customer pays attention to your product are vital), what they're getting for their dosh, and in marketting terms that's a cardinal error.

Why does it cost so much?
It is early access?
If it's early access does that make the money I spend on this at risk being being wasted?
Is it a season pass?
If it's a season pass then what's the roadmap for this season?

FD have managed to conflate everything that's confusing and risky about both the early access and season pass models. A truly impressive, if bonkers, accomplishment.

People moan about the price, but what they ACTUALLY mean to moan is that theres litte content. Which we can all agree too.

BUT, fd should market it as a seasonal pass, not a standalone game, im fine with 60 myself, but the complainers would not bat an eye if it said seasonal pass xP

Found this interesting take on Horizons and whether it's worth its price: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3hPCNOTgyUo
The first word out of his mouth, practically, is lamenting about how trade price snapshots for visited stations aren't possible. For me, and others it now seems, this ridonkulous design decision runs right to the core of everything that's disappointing about ED. The farse that is the marketting strategy for Horizons sings from exactly the same hymn sheet.

FD have about a year to sort their house out before the competition starts to gain traction, and you can be certain that they will be learning from FD's mistakes.

Paying for extra content is one thing, if you think it's too expensive for the extra content included is up to each of us to decide. But another thing entirely is selling content as "new and special" when it should have been a part of the first lot. Like planetary landings. I bought ED back in the open beta so I don't have to pay any more than I already have but it still gets up my armpits the way they're doing it :/
