Complete beginner needs helping guide

Can you please indicate system specs?
There have been issues with CPU's that are dual-core.. and may be other issues with other devices in your system too.. so lets get all the devices listed as soon as you have time - more detail better than less..

Can you run a wire to your router? Sometimes network based games do not like wifi...first thing I would suggest. Past that, I see nothing that should hold you back. You probably will need a joystick rather than mouse and keyboard..but getting the networking to work is your first problem.

Tried Solo mode. nothing happens.
Steps taken were.
Select Start, Solo wait (wait time varies.. longest was 2 minutes) for rotating ship, wait (wait time varies.. longest was 5 minutes) got cockpit view.
Confirmed headlook function works after I had assigned an available key (no mouse 3 button). [tried F12 first.. toggle did not work.. worked ok with AltGr].
Used S key to move select bar in centre to Launch and pressed enter.
Nothing seemed to happen. Waited 10 minutes. Headlook not working now. Held Esc to get back to main and exit.
I did see a message on top right about lost contact but don't know what I'm suppose to do for that.
Is the lack of information because its assumed I am a previous generation user?
Was there a user guide for the older elite version that might help me?
Please help if you can.

I am running other graphics games without any indication of network problems.
My broadband service is unlimited and performance checks have shown a minimum download of 25MB/s and upload of 5MB/s.
Performance monitoring shows network connection has 144Mb/s as speed and less than 0.5% utilisation.
I do not have any spare wired network ports on the router.

You can press 1 for navigation menu, 2 for comms, 3 for main cockpit, 4 for ship menu.

Move in the menu with WASD. Don't know whether you need to press "SPACE" or "ENTER", since I use joystick. You can use mouse in Starport Services.

Thats just another ship leaving your scanner range.

Check out https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=34437 for the Pilot's Guide. Tells almost everything.

You might want to try the tutorials at first.

The Spacebar is the "Enter" Key menu-wise. Did cost me some time to figure that one out, too ...
W,A,S,D is for directions in the menues, while Q and E select the "rider" (proper english term for that?).

Ref antivirus/firewall I had a prompt during installation/testrun and selected allow so do not believe there is a problem in that area.
I think most of my problems are due to lack of knowledge and understanding the information I have been pointed to.
The earlier post stating that they Spacebar was being used as a menu option selector threw me completely as enter and mouse click did make the selected line go unselected.
As I am so used to using Enter I have configured my options to use Enter in place of Spacebar.
I have now managed to exit the station and turned round and ready to try docking but need some more time in the cockpit in a docked ship to get used to the cockpit controls.
I would have liked a 'New to Elite' tutorial step that took me through the controls before being expected to fly the ship.
I will now work my way through the cockpit controls to get used to them before venturing out again.

I am still concerned about the time it takes to load stuff without any indication about activity other than a rotating ship. Question: if there was a problem with loading how would it show me?

Thanks for help so far. I'm sure I will need some more. :)

Ok more practice and getting more used to controls. managed to exit hangar and turn round so in position to try contacting for docking.
Pressed and held left shift for UI panel focus. screen shifted out but came back when I released the key. Isn't it supposed to stay shifted out until I press the left shift key again?

You can change the UI mode to "toggle" instead of "hold", that way it'll stay in position until you press it again. Better still is if you keybind your left (target) panel to say, F1 and your right (systems) panel to F2. Just press once to view then again to go back to the cockpit.
