I've been through thread after thread of help topics and I can't seem to find any legit help with making money. I've tried just about everything, but everythinng is incredibly vague. Long story short, I end up spending all my money on fuel because I aimlessly fly around. I can't afford mining gear, I can never find assassination targets and I can never find destinations to trade resources. What am I missing?

Get yourself into a HI RES (resource extraction site), when you find federal ships, follow them, when they attack someone wait till they are nearly finished then fire on them, you will get the bounty payout, you can make around 1-1.5 million per hour. If you get stuck, pm me your location and i,ll gladly take you into one and help you out over the weekend.

Or, get in to the background sim and fly around till you find nice bullitin board missions. This way you get to learn the game. Also you get Reputation, and Influence with the minor faction you did the missions for, and because of that, they will give you better missions the next time.

Did that a couple times, I currently have two bounties to claim but have no idea where to claim them.
Clear Save to start again. Buy a fuel scoop (you can only scoop stars that start with letters KGB FOAM - just a way of remembering the letters).
Look in the right menu for fire groups and add your basic discover scanner to a fire group (let's say group 2). When you enter a system fire it off, some system are already filled in and it will autodetect the local star without firing but it'll find other close by planets and moons in system you haven't already visited/are filled in. These can be sold once you're 20 LY away from that system, just look in Universal Cartographers. In an hours test I made 50k cr but you have to go systems you've not been to.
That should get you enough for some mining kit at least.

Resource Extraction Sites.
These come in a variety of flavours. You have Hazardous, High, Normal and Low. Any planet with rings could potentially have a RES. Check your Galaxy Map and then System Map of specific systems to see if they have any ringed planets. Head over there, drop in. Now, you're going to want to pick your targets carefully. You're looking for ships that are WANTED (Do not shoot a target before you've scanned it or you will become a target yourself). The best thing to do is wait for System Security ships to appear. They will target pirates and once they engage in combat with them, get a few shots in now and then. If successful, you will obtain the bounty. The claim amount will depend on the ship type. Be careful attacking big ships with high combat ranks, even if System Sec are attacking them. They will melt you, fast.

If you're at the very start, then you're probably still in a cheap, low-end Sidewinder. You'll need to upgrade that some if you want to progress (you probably don't have enough credits for a new ship). Try replacing the Frame Shift Drive (easier to make longer jumps/longer routes), buy a Fuel Scoop (no need to buy fuel), Powerplant (more power available); and the largest cargo bay you can (it's going to be small anyway, in a Sidey).
To do that, you'll need money. I'd stay away from combat missions if you're still in the Sidey, try doing some easy haulage missions for now. They don't cost you anything, and they're low risk. Also, keep an eye on the Active Community Goals thread here. Sometimes, if you get in at the right time, you can make millions of credits in just a handful of jumps. Ask on that thread too, they might be able to advise if/when there's a suitable CG happening.
Trade can involve a lot of jumping around if you don't have an exact plan, and you don't want that in the Sidewinder. Rares trading even worse. Smuggling / Robigo missions worse again, I'd imagine. So build up your credits with haulage, then upgrade, and you can take on more (mining, combat, smuggling, exploration...)

As a noob myself I prefer hanging out around NAV beacons for bounty hunting (these are found around the primary star of any system) and just wait around the beacon until you see someone who is wanted. Give them a swift death and you will receive a bounty certificate for the kill then just go to the nearest starport go under contacts and turn in the bounty.
Light hauling missions (trading). Some early couruer missions that require you to go to station X and deliver a message. These only pay a few thousand at best but thats how i started.

Me and a mate just started the game last week so we're still very new as well. We've got the hang of bounty hunting and getting around. Have started to try get into powerplay and trading. Making money is quite easy at RES. If you'd like a couple of peeps to learn along side with hit me up. My GT is the same as my username here.
