If you’re getting game crashes, I’ve found that playing in open or “private group” mode seems much more stable, rather than solo.
I had problems recently on the xbox with game crashes at guardian sites while playing in solo mode, but as soon as I switched to private or open it worked fine with no crashes. Same with ship launched fighters for some reason - solo is crashy, open or private is fine. Private mode with one player works fine.
I’d recommend private over open - just for this purpose - since you’re unlikely to be using a fighting build and ganking at guardian sites is apparently a thing. But open is where I mostly play, unless it’s unavoidable (like engineering exploration builds).
For the pylon part - this is the hardest bit imo because of the site being large and wierd. It really helps to get a map, as others have said, and it’s best to do this in daylight if possible. The day on most of the guardian planets I’ve used has been roughly two earth days, so if you wait a bit and try again tomorrow, it’ll be way easier. It took me about a dozen trial runs to get the hang of it, but the pattern I settled into is:
- get one artefact by shooting the top of any obelisk thing and scooping the artefact
- go to the data terminal /temple thing so that the pylons rise
- visit all six of the pylons to raise them all, shooting the sentinels whenever you see them
- visit all six pylons again, visiting the outlying, tricky ones away from the center first and shoot them all, finishing with the two at the data terminal
- go to the glowing X tile and jettison the artefact you picked up at the start, glowing ball will emerge
- scan the glowing ball of ancient wisdom with the data scanner to get the blueprint
This is maybe 10 mins per blueprint once you get the hang of it, and you only need to do it a handful of times. Gathering all the other guardian materials is easy and the non-guardian elements for unlocks are all easy (use inara). It’s extra schlepping around but it’s fairly quick, as long as your ship has a good jump range.
Other tips I found useful:
- Mount point defence turrets on the top side of your ship and land the ship as close to the site as is convenient; the turret/s will shoot down almost all of the sentinel missiles before they hit you
- three pips to sys, three to wep for fighting sentinels
- Gather / trade materials before you set out for SRV refuel/rearm/repair, since you’ll be a long way from home and you’ll almost certainly need refills
Once you’ve got the hang of it, this part of the game is great fun and I’ve done it even after unlocking stuff just because it’s interesting and different. Although I feel a bit sorry for the sentinels - you try and get a quick few centuries of nap time and then some random meatbag wakes you up, steals all your stuff and shoots you. Very irritating
Good luck!
