Newcomer / Intro composition of rings / belts.

When prospecting in unexplored space do I need to carry a detailed surface scanner to learn the composition of the fields? Or will a normal scan suffice?

You don't need to surface scan asteroids at all, it will tell you just on the discovery scan. As for rings, I'm fairly certain you don't need an DSS, but it's been a long time since I've been without one.

I have an advanced scanner and a detailed scanner. I've noticed that if I scan a planet with rings, its not identify the composition. Don't know if I'm doing something wrong.

The info should appear on the first line of the description of the ring:

In this example it says "Ring type: Metal Rich"

Do you need to be close to get that because I have just been getting pristine but no composition. I see the comp on systems already explored but not my own. Strange.

Discovering the parent body will usually give you details about the ring. With an ADS, you should be able to do this without effort. I've yet to come across an instance where the system view did not display the data.
