I've seen them around, but don't understand them, their in-game purposes, nor lore.
What is the point of them?
Does the game change for the system when one is present?
How do they become compromised, and is it reversible?

Its the same system as a HAZ REZ. The beacon is broken so security forces will not be alerted which means rich pickings for BH
