Concern about Fan Backlash...

Dear Braben, Brookes, Frontier Development Staff and Forum Community,

I'm concerned. I'm worried. And for once. Not for myself, not since Chewbrookie latched himself onto me as owing me some kind of 'beer debt' that I can never repay.

But watching the community for a while (and being a wonderful part of it) I am worried about what I can see as an inevitable backlash to the release of Elite Dangerous here. And I think here is where the staff expect perhaps the most heartfelt support, me in fact see the forum waters turn red as we go in for the attack. In reaction to the DDF Archive, some of the releases etc I think that perhaps when the game is released A LOT of people here on the forums will be loud and vocal of their disapproval of how the game turned out.

I think it's a lot like The Phantom Menace, I don't think it's important what was in that movie, I think Lucas would have found it almost impossible to nail it perfectly and the backlash was inevitable. I feel with Elite and Frontier and First Encounters, the expectation is too high. I expect you guys being professionals are expecting a certain percentage of the community to not be happy with the final decisions, I just hope you're ready to accept a lot of criticism and be able to take on board that which is merited and ignore that which isn't.

I expect to like a lot of the game, not like some elements of it and accept the game for what it is. And I hope I'm wrong and everyone is relatively happy with the final product.

Good luck guys, remaking the fourth sequel to three classic games after all this time. The expectation is high and although I have no doubt you're up to the task, I hope everyone at the end of the day can take two steps back and remember. It's just a game. Well your livelihood, but for us, just a game.

Shaun Gibson (not writing as Jeff Ryan right now).

PS. For the record I think this is one of the best online communities I've ever been a part of.

I can't see them getting any criticism from me. I suppose I am a DDF member and have a good idea what is coming though.

I'm not the sort of person to go off on one or have a rant so maybe I'm not the best person to use as a gauge for this.

I reckon the game is going to be great so lighten up!

Apprehension is understandable - the game has been a long time in the waiting. However I personally feel your fears are misplaced - perhaps you are projecting them onto others in an attempt to alleviate your own feelings ?

This portion of your post troubled me the most - what makes you think that a lot of people will be disapproving ? What do you think they will be unhappy with ? (I ignored the vocal part - only people who complain tend to post in forums after release as those who like/enjoy the game are busy playing it ;))

It's a fair comment... I can see me being able to live with pretty much everything apart from lack of "free roam" and lack of a HUD only view. Lack of free roam because it just won't feel like Elite. No HUD only view because cockpit views mess with my eyes/head.

But even then I can understand the solutions they have/had chosen and, while I will politely try and get my voice heard in changing them, I won't rant and rage about things because I have no right to demand or expect anything. I've pledged to DDF level and, potentially, may end up playing only for a few hours - such is life. I just hope we get no more "refund my pledge" posts because they do my head in even more than cockpit views! ;)

Oh I've seen a few posts of the 'MY GOD YOU'VE RUINED THE GAME!!!' And that's just people reading DDF Archives. Don't get me wrong, I understand why this post can be seen as a criticism of the community. It really isn't. I think that when the bar is set so high it's going to be hard to meet it. And whilst a lot of us will understand this, a lot of us won't. And I hope that if that happens, Braben, Brookes and Co won't take it too much to heart. And just laugh and giggle as the money rolls in :D

Yes, definitely with withnail on this. The game isn't even out yet so I see little point in drawing premature conclusions on how the community will react.

For sure, there is bound to be some problems here and there with the game. Happens all the time in game development. This is why Frontier took the brave step of creating the DDF in the first place and those folks in there are doing a great job, not only in deciding the course of certain aspects of the game, but also in helping Frontier avoid potential problems by pointing them out.

As for criticism, again Frontier have never hid away from that. Constructive criticism actually helps the design process as you will see when the Alpha & Beta tests start. You find a problem or bug, report it, that's a good thing, it helps the game be better. :)

One thing I will say though, no game can be perfect. For example, my vision of a "perfect" Elite game would differ from the next person. What the important thing to bare in mind is that most of what we would like to see will be there because we are all helping to create it by posting our ideas and developing discussions. Note I said discussions, not arguments, those don't help anyone least of all Frontier. Also don't forget the future updates that are still to come after release. Again, even further tweaks to the game can be implemented further along the line. Seems to me a pretty rock solid way to design a game.

To me at least there is far more to be optimistic about rather than be apprehensive, keep the faith! ;)

Yup Raven i very much +10 that view,, the REFUND demands wind me up more,

I can say this game is not what I wanted it to be already... and I am over it.
I am sooo excited to see what it is and how I can make it more like what I wanted.

You all know or at least suspect that what I want from a game may be VERY FAR from what you'd like...

Anyway I have since gotten my head round it.. and I am happy with what is coming.. its going to be great!!

I think some people are reading into the recent tech-demo too much. Treat it as it is, a tech demo.

I have no doubt that we have nothing to worry about. Its going to be a great game. Have a little faith people, have a little faith.....

woof woof! - That's my other dog impression.

I understand why this post can be seen as a criticism of the community. It really isn't.

My mistake then sorry. I thought you were vocalising your concerns.

As Geraldine said you can't please everyone.

I, for one though, am quite excited - the recent video (albeit a mock up) made me dance around the room.

It's happening :)

There is always haters that are very visible on forums voicing theire oppinion on games and features.
They are usualy a small minority of the fan base tho even if they make so much noise. I think you are overestimating these forum haters/trolls a lot.

You can't fulfill everyone's expectations. Main question is - will Elite fans give ED fair chance? If yes, disappointment will be kept at minimum.

I have lot of ideas what I would like to see in ED, most of them implementable. However, it's not my game, so I can just pass them on, and see what FD developers can do with them.

I think what we saw this week was confirmation that FD has *means* to deliver what they have promised. Will I like it? Judging from all info, it is high possibility that it will be my ideal game. Will everyone like it? Heck no. But that's how life works.

For me, pledging ED was a bet I was very willing to make. And since Friday's morning, I'm really happy I made that bet.

I think the main reason for some of the negativity on the forum and elsewhere is due to the fact that Elite and Frontier are two completely different games, with the same goal.

People seem want one or the other ... it is an issue that Frontier Developments made for themselves and an issue the they will have to solve before the game comes out ..

Who to please, Elite fans, Frontier fans, FFE fans or someone else, it wont be easy but I do have faith ..

Bring on Elite: Dangerous !

I think the OP has a fair point to an extent. In the general and gameplay forums I've seen some pretty entrenched views about several aspects. The one thing I'm certain about is that compromises will be made, decisions taken and some people won't like the result. How big and how vocal the complaints will be is unknown and it may be little more than a collective harrumph from the discontent.

For me personally, I entered this with little more than fond memories of a very old game and very little idea of what to expect. So far I've been extremely impressed by what I've seen and it far surpasses my limited expectations.

The thing to remember is: it's not a film.

And before I get flamed by people hitting 'reply to post' with their military lasers, can I explain?

We've all seen wonderful trailers for so-so movies, where the characters are wooden, the story awful and for some reason the producers think we'll all fall in love with the CG furry fluffball with the big eyes that keeps getting into scrapes, etc. etc. You leave the cinema feeling gruntled about the whole experience and swearing you will never fall for their hype again...

Elite, when it comes, won't be like that. There is no plot, no story, except the one you want to play out. Elite will just be a backdrop, a star-splattered playground for you to have adventures in. It will be like the previous versions, except you will with and against real people (unless you don't want to), with enough places to visit and enough variety to never get boring. Any annoyances people may have initially will probably be very quickly forgotten.

My worry, on the other hand: will I really be able to sit and let others have alpha access, posting videos and forum updates about their experiences?

I don't think so.

I agree about the community, though. I backed the 'Sir you are being hunted' kickstarter and have alpha access to the game now, but the forums are booooring!

It's the dangers of a dedicated fan base, where the old saying really does come into it's own: You can please some of the people some of the time, the rest will get annoyed. Or something like that.. :D

Many game companies don't release much information about their creations before it's being launched. Sometimes it may be to keep secrets, or perhaps they know it's not going to go down well, sell badly etc. In cases like Elite it's a double edged sword. By not releasing information they wouldn't have people arguing like space crazy folks but then, they recognise the passion we all have and are feeding their creative dream to us. Sometimes the dream is identical to our own, other times there are differences but one thing binds us together like a family, albeit a slightly deranged and dysfunctional family, we dream of flying in space, trading, fighting and exploring with everything in between. If Frontiers dream is different from mine, so be it, I'll just dream their dream as well as mine for a while till the two merge.

For me all they have to do is remake the original elite with a few extra bells and whistle and better graphics. TA DAAAA

(Basically the next step up from Oolite with multi player)

After all... if it aint broke.... dont fix it....

A big part of my 100 pound donation to kickstarter was just to say thankyou Mr B for influencing a part of my happy childhood. :)

The fact that Im getting a new game, t-shirt, book, poster etc.... well hell thats all just super thick chunky monkey icing on the cake... :D

Jeff, have you been at the Sunday afternoon alcohol and reached the crying and proclaiming 'I really love you' stage?

Don't worry it'll all look a lot rosier by tomorrow morning... err, maybe afternoon. :D

This is actually the best forum for a supportive atmosphere I have ever been on.

I've been using forums for seventeen years, run one for 3000 people for six years and been threatened with legal action (long story, but as a site admin, if you haven't been seriously threatened with legal action over some random persons forum posts once in your life, you haven't lived...:D)

In my experience, threads pitching a discussion like this never go well.

With respect to the OP, who I think is a really great guy. Forum culture can become melodramatic, which I think this thread is symptomatic of. I think those of us who've been here for a bit should be focusing effort on things we have to talk about, not speculating quite so much on other people's views further down the line.

We've an influx of new enthusiastic people who've just discovered this game is coming out and are arriving here wondering what the excitement's all about. Let's share some of that, not spend worry on things we may not need to worry about.

Plus an Elite comparison to Phantom Menace? LOL not cool...;)
