I'm not ashamed to admit it, nor will I hide the fact if I'm asked. I am lowly, degenerate scum. I am incorrigible and shameless, merciless and remorseless, not to mention greedy. My mother isn't proud of me and I'm not invited home for the holidays. No one is ever happy to see me and those of delicate constitution faint at my presence. I support myself off your hard earned credits and have no desire to make an honest living. I am petty and will avenge any perceived slight to my authority (assuming I think I can get away with it).
I am a pirate.
I also have a code of conduct, a professional demeanor and a charitable side. I never attack without warning, I never ask for anyone's entire load of cargo, and I frequently interdict Sidewinders to give them gifts of free cargo. I'm damned good at what I do. To the best of my recollection, I've only been killed by a Commander once while in this profession. I've led possies of angry Commanders on chases around entire sectors. I currently have several large groups of players quite angry with me (they know who they are) and the people that manage to escape me feel damn lucky to have done so. I always prefer a trader to submit and let us work out a fair payment plan. However, I'm more than happy to kill them if they refuse. The only thing that frustrates me about this job?
Combat logging.
I don't mind players fighting me or bringing in friends to hunt me or using cheap in-game tactics to get away. I don't mind the fact that I'll never make anywhere near the dividends that a trader will. I don't even mind it if you block me so you don't see me again in the future. I understand all that. But quitting the game to avoid any sort of loss after I've interdicted you? That's just cowardly. This game provides you with GREAT OPTIONS to avoid player piracy if you so desire. You never have to encounter a player pirate if you don't want to. But if you're going to play in Open, that's a risk you take. Personally, I think it's a risk that adds enjoyment to the game, but I suppose I'm biased.
When I have 3 players in an hour quit the game to avoid an encounter, it's clear that there's a problem. There's no punishment for doing something that completely removes any player-created risk from the game and totally invalidates the primary mode offered. It's... frustrating to say the least. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.
Side Note:
Ask a pirate anything!
