Confessions of a Pirate (Rant on Combat Logging included as free bonus!)

I'm not ashamed to admit it, nor will I hide the fact if I'm asked. I am lowly, degenerate scum. I am incorrigible and shameless, merciless and remorseless, not to mention greedy. My mother isn't proud of me and I'm not invited home for the holidays. No one is ever happy to see me and those of delicate constitution faint at my presence. I support myself off your hard earned credits and have no desire to make an honest living. I am petty and will avenge any perceived slight to my authority (assuming I think I can get away with it).

I am a pirate.

I also have a code of conduct, a professional demeanor and a charitable side. I never attack without warning, I never ask for anyone's entire load of cargo, and I frequently interdict Sidewinders to give them gifts of free cargo. I'm damned good at what I do. To the best of my recollection, I've only been killed by a Commander once while in this profession. I've led possies of angry Commanders on chases around entire sectors. I currently have several large groups of players quite angry with me (they know who they are) and the people that manage to escape me feel damn lucky to have done so. I always prefer a trader to submit and let us work out a fair payment plan. However, I'm more than happy to kill them if they refuse. The only thing that frustrates me about this job?

Combat logging.

I don't mind players fighting me or bringing in friends to hunt me or using cheap in-game tactics to get away. I don't mind the fact that I'll never make anywhere near the dividends that a trader will. I don't even mind it if you block me so you don't see me again in the future. I understand all that. But quitting the game to avoid any sort of loss after I've interdicted you? That's just cowardly. This game provides you with GREAT OPTIONS to avoid player piracy if you so desire. You never have to encounter a player pirate if you don't want to. But if you're going to play in Open, that's a risk you take. Personally, I think it's a risk that adds enjoyment to the game, but I suppose I'm biased.

When I have 3 players in an hour quit the game to avoid an encounter, it's clear that there's a problem. There's no punishment for doing something that completely removes any player-created risk from the game and totally invalidates the primary mode offered. It's... frustrating to say the least. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.

Side Note:

Ask a pirate anything!

Well, I'm a trader - you are needed for this game to have depth and risk, so don't ever change your profession!

So I have the hardest question of all.

Why are real Pirates called 'Griefers'!
I can't figure that one out!

And for the record - Frontier really need to do something about combat logging!

Technically, true for X=any real number :p

But +1 rep for actually working it out ;)

I was really worried I'd lost the ability to do maths.. I am a pirate but I ended up with -x+3 = -x+3 lol :( glad I wasn't completely wrong thanks for the challenge, lost a dota game doing that but It was worth it!

I do know how it works, and as such I don't have anyone blocked in Open, but he said ask him anything, its the most relevant question I could come up with and it wasn't already asked. ;)

(I don't see how this thread can go well, but the OP said any question, so a pub quiz sounds like a good plan! :))

I watched a pirate stream today for 2 hours.

I've seen people get away from him using all sorts of techniques, some just dumped some cargo, some attacked him, some run away.

Only ONE player actually logged out on him - not combat log, but regular menu log out. That is pretty much a 1 time trick you can pull on a pirate if he bothers writing down names.

In the end, he made around half a million credits from pirating rare goods.

I will continue watching pirate streams, mostly because they are far more entertaining than all those cargo streamers with bad EDM music in the background

But it doesn't really look like combat logging is a big issue to player pirates. It's more of an issue of bounty hunters who try to get their hands on people like test:MH.

Well, I guess a lot of folks think that if you can live with being scum, petty, greedy, merciless, et al, that they can live with a little cowardice. Just saying.

Wow, didn't expect so many responses. I guess I'll just answer things as I come to them.

5(-3x- 2)-(x- 3) = -4(4x+5)+13

Solve for X
x=x therefore X is any real number. I can't remember how imaginaries work off the top of my head, so I'll leave those out.

Thanks, glad you support me! Wanna let me know when and where you're hauling a bunch of rares? As to why we are called griefers, I have no idea. I think it comes down to people just not understanding that one-sided PvP doesn't equal detrimental PvP.
What is your commander name again?
NeoMaddy, same as my forum name. Feel free to hunt me down or ignore me! Either is completely up to you.

Damn, you've got me. Without cheating, you've got me stumped.
Who picks up all the toys from around your pram ?
Unfortunately I've been abandoned, forced to pick up all my Legos myself. It's a sad state to the world.

To be fair, several of these could have been regular menu log outs. I think the same issue applies. That's no different in my opinion. It's still attempting to circumvent the game systems. It's funny, test was actually attempting to collect on one of my bounties today...

There's an important difference, however. I'm doing all my bad habits behavior well within the in-game systems. They are abusing the game to display their bad habits. I'm adding gameplay, they're removing it.

Q: What does a pirate do every 3rd of April in the shadow of an eclipse?

Q2; Do you wear an eyepatch, if so, has it affected your piloting?

Q3: Do you plan to continue pirating when we can land on planets?

Q4/5: What is your choice of ship? What is it's name?

Q6: If you are allied with a faction, which faction would that be?

Q7: Final question, how would you pronounce my name?

Thank y'aar for your time.

EDIT: Can't count.

I've met this gentleman yesterday (or was it on saturday?) and though I must admit that I was quite angry after relinquishing 12T out of my 36T of rares SO CLOSE to Fujin (or was it Lave?), especially after seeing that same gentleman dock in the same spaceport and cashing in money from MY rares, I have to say that I found the whole interdiction/mugging/negociation/yourefreetogo quite fun, actually.

I could have tried to fight back, I could have went solo or private, I could have put a bullet in his back when he was docking but hell, I chose to play Open for all the possible player-to-player interactions and being mugged by a guy who follow a strict code is EXACTLY fitting in the said interactions.

So, Neomaddy, I don't know if I'm hit with a Stockholm syndrome here, but I'd like to tip my hat to you because thanks to you and your fellow pirates, I have my share of stories to tell (been interdicted maybe 4 or 5 times after our encounter and not all of them ended the same way :) )

Plus, let my fellow traders recognize it: being mugged for rares isn't a big deal because we don't lose THAT MUCH money. We do lose a potential gain, and the road to riches can be quite long (150 Ly is kind of a long haul), but the real loss is more around 10K than 400K. If i was robbed from Gold paid the full price, I would of course tell a different story.

Plus who knows? I might stumble upon Neomaddy (I'm sure I will) and maybe this time I'll try to resist. It's all up to us so no rant for me.

To quote Omar Little, the only true gentleman of West Baltimore: "It's all in the game, yo"

Of course my good man, I'll be sure to be in the 'correct' ship when I pass by! ;)

Combat logging is horrid

but what this game needs

is locator agents, so you pay the NPCS money to find the system of a player. So you can go and hunt them down directly.

1. Personally, I'd be in a RES somewhere, trying and failing to avoid asteroids while stealing your monotonously earned metals.
2. Nay on the eyepatch, but the hook hand does make using lateral thrusters quite the challenge. Not to mention all the smoke inside my cockpit from the burning fuses in my beard.
3. Landing on planets doesn't particularly interest me. If I can rob people while they are out of their ships then yes, I will happily go down to planetside.
4/5. Are you implying that I only have a single ship? My flotilla awaits my command. However, I do most of my privateering in my swift Cobra, the redoubtable Sea .
6. I only attack traders in Alliance/Federation space, so I suppose that leaves me aligned with the Empire.
7. You don't attempt to pronounce the names of servants of the Old Ones, that way lies madness and despair.

Well, Lave or Fujin are both possibilites. I've been rumored to have bounties on my head in both of those systems. I can neither confirm nor deny these rumors. That said, thank you for letting me know I should demand more from my, er... customers. I'll definitely take this into consideration! Furthermore, do tell me where you'd be shipping these loads of gold. I'd love to escort you safely to your destination!
