Newcomer / Intro Config for QUERTY keyboard and mouse

Hello,

I'm a new player.

In the past, I have played several simulated flying games, but in Elite Dangerous control of the ship is not easy and we lose patience pretty quickly.

Example: The left side shift (A) and the right shift (D) do not work well when landing in a station. The vessel does not move laterally and tends to turn left or right.

In addition, the default configuration for the keyboard and mouse gives sea seasickness (Roll and pitch).

So the ship's controls work badly and it takes away any desire to continue playing this game.

I'm looking for a good config for the mouse and the QWERTY keyboard.

Example: The left side shift (A) and the right shift (D) do not work well when landing in a station. The vessel does not move laterally and tends to turn left or right.
That's because A and D are bound to yaw left and right by default. Left and right thrust are Q and E. See page 44 of the game manual.

I use mouse keyboard and yes, A and D on yaw (my first and third fingers sit here)

I have mouse left-right on Roll, mouse up-down for Pitching, the nose.

With W (up throttle), and S (down throttle) ..
For thrusters, Q-E are left-right translation and R-F for vertical thrust.

Adding number pad (+ and Enter) for forward and reverse thrusters, I also have an extra mapping for the mouse controls (pitch and roll) on the Numpad Arrows left-right, up-down, giving a digital pitch/roll alternative.

For interest my mouse wheel, centre button, toggles headlook isolating the mouse from ship control (Headlook Mode, is where I use numpad arrows for ship pitch-roll and mouse is now headlook control). Have an extra mapping (AutoHotKey) on numpad 5, also to toggle to/from headlook.

The 'pitch on roll' feature is also worth a look at in the controls options, and here's a (general) tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCWE4uSlFk8

(Repost)

I've changed my KB&M settings after watching a few YouTube videos but mainly after this:

  • Having mouse set to Pitch & Yaw instead of Pitch & Roll was also one of the first tips I came across in this subforum.
  • I ignored the change from the video to the Relative Mouse Axis as didn't feel comfortable with that and I think that's only if you prefer using Flight Assist OFF all the time. I only use FA OFF when in combat and want to turn around quicker.
  • Having the mouse thumb (side) buttons for thrust (not throttle) is really helpful in combat and speedy docking.
Additionally I use the mouse click wheel for throttle (default is W&S).
  • I had to change the keybinding for 'jettison all cargo' after pressing that a couple of times by accident.

So my major settings are now setup as follows:
  • Mouse: Pitch & Yaw. (Default is Pitch & Roll)
  • Mouse wheel up/down: Throttle Up/Down
  • Mouse side thumb buttons first/second: Thrust forward/backward
  • Q/E: Roll Left/Right
  • W/S: Thrust Up/Down
  • A/D: Thrust Left/Right (It's been mentioned that WASD setup this way is more intuitive if you've played FPS games in the past.)

  • Throttle increment: 12.5% (CONTINUOUS is default)

  • Tab: Boost (default) although another said he found Spacebar better as he could use the left thumb for that.
  • Z: Flight Assist (default) but switched to TOGGLE (HOLD is default)
  • X: Throttle to zero (default)
  • C: Chaff
  • V: Heatsink (default)
  • B: Shield Cell Bank

  • M,./: Set throttle to 25,50,75,100% (and then using <RIGHT SHIFT> plus the same keys for -ve values). But tend to only use 50,75 and 100%.

  • <CTRL> G: Galaxy Map
  • <CTRL> S: System Map

  • J: Toggle FSD (default)
  • <CTRL> J: Enable FSD to supercruise - useful when you are unable to hyperjump (high-wake) to a system because it is obscured by a celestial body.

Using FSD has different actions depending on if you have locked a system or not:
Target System LockedKey PressedResult
NOJSupercruise (facing any direction)
YESJHyperjump (once facing target)
YES but obscured<CTRL> JSupercruise (facing any direction)
then fly around the celestial body
before pressing J to hyperjump

If you are struggling to remember all the keys ( I know i did those first few weeks) you could print out a guide (as well as save and download configs) using:
Elite: Dangerous Reference Sheet Generator

The rest of my key settings but on a MacBook: http://www.mcdee.net/elite/binds/iswhwp

(I did at a later date try to change my PIP management from the arrow keys to number keys but my muscle memory could no longer adapt.)

CMDR Mr. Boombastic,
Throttle on mouse scroll? Interesting idea, but i once had to use scroll on the stick for throttle (had broken right arm, so played with a stick/left hand, just not enough easily accessible buttons for everything) and it seemed totally terrible. Changes are far too slow and imprecise (as you said - 12.5% per "tick"), i just could not adapt to enemy speed fast enough.
I play with KB+M most of the time, as i like it more, and i use W/S for throttle and Space/Ctrl for Up/Down. Using Ctrl obviously causes some issues, but its location makes it perfect for the job.
Also i use F for SCB, as it is closer and can be accessed without moving whole hand towards it.
Power distribution presets on mouse side buttons (as i have precise throttle control i really never felt any need to use thrust forward/bacwards, if i need a short pulse i will just increse throttle slightly and hit x).
Everything else is basically the same.

Don't use the incremental throttle controls.

Instead, map buttons to 100%, 75%, 50% and 0% throttle. Use thrusters for backing up - they override the throttle setting and you never need that much control when reversing; you're usually just getting out of the mailslot after forgetting to request docking or you're flying backwards to deal with a particularly irritating NPC.

100% for going as fast as you can (i.e. running away)
75% for supercruise to approach a station when you get to 6 seconds out
50% for blue zone max turn rates
0% for stopping
