I need to ascertain some combat voucher's for an engineer. Apparently he requires 50 of them. If and when I get the fifty and the battle isn't over or maybe I've only got half or so and leave as to not get destroyed. Do I get to keep the bonds I've earned while in the mix?

Yes, just like bounties, you will keep any combat bonds you have unless you get destroyed before you hand them in. No requirement to win the battle.

So, earn as many as you feel comfortable doing, then go hand them into the engineer... You can do that in parts, don't need the whole lot in one go.
